(AP) \u2014 Carolina Hurricanes captain and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/conn-smythe-playoff-mvp-jordan-staal-263d1093403412772818b06ab6d510d6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reigning playoff MVP Jordan Staal<\/a> is out 1-2 months with a partially torn calf muscle, coach Rod Brind\u2019Amour said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Staal was hurt during pregame warmups <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hurricanes-flyers-score-b51896d61995e39c08d3838aa9b64eff\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sunday at Philadelphia<\/a>, according to Brind\u2019Amour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was just something he did in warmup: a freaky thing, but it is what it is,\u201d Brind&#8217;Amour said following his team&#8217;s morning skate. \u201cNot good news there, but we\u2019ve had a lot of injuries over the years and we\u2019re just going to have to keep figuring it out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The defending Stanley Cup champions now have to go without one of their most important centers while already <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/carolina-hurricanes-seth-jarvis-72ede24fb8f24a703cc5ef0e89228423\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">missing winger Seth Jarvis<\/a> for the start of the season following shoulder surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Staal won the Conn Smythe Trophy for his contributions on Carolina&#8217;s title run, which included scoring six goals in the final, winning 55% of his faceoffs and playing lockdown defense against some of the NHL&#8217;s top players.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe gets the tough matchups every night,\u201d Brind&#8217;Amour said. \u201cNo hiding that now. We\u2019re all going to have to step up a little more with those two guys out, in particular.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jesperi Kotkaniemi figures to take Staal\u2019s spot in the lineup, with the Hurricanes expected to call up a forward from the minors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you have guys out that we have \u2014 high-end top players that do so much for your team \u2014 you\u2019re not replacing them with one guy,\u201d Brind&#8217;Amour said. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of sharing the duties.
