[Athletic] Nico Hoerner gives Cubs options in free agency: Go big at shortstop or spend elsewhere

Both please
If Wilson leaves, we will need upgrades at Catcher, 3rd base, 2nd base, and first base. Basically we need a new infield minus Nico. A top starter, and a closer. I’m not including outfield because I’m hoping they bring up some young guys. Let’s see if they start putting there money where there mouth is in terms of being competitive next season.
Please go after devers
I’d really like us to still get one of the big shortstops. Having the flexibility of 2 great shortstops with a guy that plays multiple positions (in this case can be Morel) was what made the 2016 team especially great. The defense really allowed the staff to be great
Morel/Nico/Madrigal/Wisdom IF we want to give Madrigal a chance and spend for a SP. Im down for a FA SS signing and moving Nico to 2nd tho.
spend elsewhere. He has earned the job. Why spend a bunch at a position where your 1st round draft pick is a 4-5 WAR player? Spend on pitching and a corner IF Bat. Shit if they want to extend Willson since they don’t need to go get a SS they can do that now too. The free agent class this offseason isn’t that good anyways. Better to save up money and go big next offseason.
Nico is my favorite current Cub, and I think he’s going to be a borderline super star as he continues to develop and get better. That being said they shouldn’t shy away from signing a big name SS this off season. You could always move Nico to 2B
Sign Correa who has already said he would move to third for the right situation, then bring Rodon home to Chicago to headline the rotation, give Willson his extension and baby you got a stew goin’.
Morel CF
Suzuki RF
Correa 3B
Contreras C
Happ LF
Wisdom 1B
Hoerner SS
Madrigal 2B
Ortega/Velazquez/whoever DH
Rodon/Stroman/Hendricks/Steele/Thompson
would going after bell be an option? I doubt san diego will be able to pay him enough
Maybe Bogaerts can play 2B? I feel like Nico has earned the shortstop position. Unless the Cubs really believe in Nick Madrigal hitting singles
The Cubs aren’t going to spend big $ in FA this year.
Trea Turner at SS, Hoerner at 2B, Madrigal can come off the bench.
I’m also a proponent of moving Happ to 1st and if he’s stays on his current pace, maybe extend him.
Cubs aren’t spending shit. We’ll suck for years.
Given that we have so very little anywhere else on the diamond, and Nico can play other positions, he shouldn’t effect what they do at SS in free agency at all. Get one of the big three and have two good middle infielders. If we were to sign Turner, I think we’d be better off keeping Nico at SS and putting Turner at second.
