Matt Forte on Roquan situation: ‘The Bears are definitely cheap’

  1. >“The Bears, they are definitely cheap, and they give guys a hard time,” Forte said. “I don’t know, they pay a lot of guys who don’t deserve the money and sometimes the guys who do deserve it, they don’t pay them.”

    Forte isn’t very bright

  2. ~~Love Matt Forte but IIRC he was another guy (like Lance Briggs) who tested the open market and found that his own perceived market didn’t line up with the rest of the league’s perception.~~

Scratch that – Forte actually was franchise-tagged and then re-signed before training camp to a pretty nice deal.

Not sure how many folks remember, but DeAngelo Williams signed this ridiculous contract w/ the Panthers just before Matt Forte was set to hit free agency, and there was this thought that his bloated deal would skew the RB market not too dissimilar to how Christian Kirk’s skewed the WR market.

Also, I mean, the Bears re-signed Forte to a 4 year / 32 million dollar deal in 2012. That would have made him the 6th highest paid RB **this year** so I mean it’s not like he was underpaid IMO.

  3. What an old and tired narrative. They spend money all the time. They give players extensions. If Poles doesn’t think Roquan is worth the money he is asking for then he shouldn’t do it. Build the team how you want not how the media or fans want.

  4. As a Redditor it’s my duty to not read the article and only react to the headline.

    With that being said…

The Bears just did a massive upgrade on Halas Hall to make it one of the top facilities in the league

They gave Mack the largest contract for a defensive player in NFL history

They gave Eddie Jackson the highest safety contract in NFL history

They are currently purchasing a large plot of land to build McCaskey/Chicago/Bear/Halas World which will include a state of the art stadium

And since I’m assuming that Forte is saying this about the Roquan situation, Poles’ has already said parts of the contract offer were record breaking

  5. Forte: The Bears are cheap

Also Forte, in the same exact sentence: The Bears pay a lot of guys.

  6. The McCaskeys aren’t cheap. They’re just really bad at running an NFL franchise.

  7. They aren’t cheap. Pace was just extremely bad at allocating the money available correctly.

  8. Pretty rich coming from him, as from personal experience, Forte would often never tip when he came into our restaurant.

  9. It’s not that they are cheap, the administration never puts the organization in a situation where they develop or draft enough players to become worthy of paying a lot of money to. There have been plenty of free agents that other organizations developed and drafted, and the bears payed plenty of money for them. But since the organization sucks they never produce players worthy of paying.

  10. This narrative is so tired. The Bears aren’t cheap. They’re just poorly run. It’s not because of how much they are or are not willing to spend

  11. The team will never win another super bowl as long as this ownership is in place. Fuck each and every one of the McCaskeys with a rusty fork, old crumpled bag of bones Virginia’s first on the damn list.

  12. Players, whether former or current, will ALWAYS back fellow players in getting big paychecks, regardless of how absurd the ask is. It’s in their best interests for salaries to go higher. I don’t blame them for it at all, but it’s silly to act like they’re not incredibly biased when it comes to contract discussions.

The Bears aren’t “cheap”, but they definitely have a penchant for throwing money at the wrong people/positions, which is something the new regime is trying to avoid.

  13. *Team low balls the fuck out of Robbie Gould, asks him take a pay cut from his 3M despite being one of the best in league all time kicking at one of the hardest places to kick, then cuts him when he refuses*

“The McCaskey’s aren’t cheap, they pay people what they are worth.”

    Same people.

“Why did we get rid of Gould over a couple of hundred grand, what a terrible decision that was.”

Bears can simultaneously be generally cheap, and overpay for things they shouldn’t. That’s basically the modus operandi of the organization over the years.

  14. Matt forte is on my favorite bears player list. Top 10. Gave everything he had for us and way out performed his draft position. He can say what he wants. He’s earned that respect from me.

  15. McCaskets rather save $4m then save the teams defense . Weak bodies in suits making decisions about a strong body in uniform

  16. Baseball teams can be cheap, NFL teams can’t.

Teams must spend at least 89% of the cap (over a 4 year period). So even the cheapest owner can only save 11%.

“Cheap” teams are just prioritizing their spending elsewhere. Save money on stars, and have more to spend on your other starters. Save money on offense, and spend it on defense. Save money on starters, and spend it on depth.

You can skimp on your stadium, training facilities, coaches, etc, but you can’t skimp on players.

  17. The bears are cheap AF to quote Ditka

“They throw around nickels like manhole covers”
