paywall Athletic article -“…the club is far from satisfied, internally, with where they stand going into this season.” -Drance & Dhaliwal

I included a link to the article which has lots of good intel in it. The point I want to feature is in the quote below which is that management wants to make more changes, but has been unable to so far. It’s going to take time.

“In their first season in charge, the harsh realities of the flat cap made it prohibitive for Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford and general manager Patrik Allvin to shed salary, get younger and upgrade their defense corps (particularly on the right side) at the pace that the club had hoped for.”

“New management has inherited a roster that’s not poor enough to rebuild, not good enough to contend, poorly positioned cap-wise and built so that the majority of their non-essential cap commitments are tied up into assets that have turned out to be distressed in the new flat cap marketplace. Is it any wonder, with that in mind, that this offseason played out in such pedestrian fashion?

At least the club is far from satisfied, internally, with where they stand going into this season.” -Drance & Dhaliwal

  1. I’d hope they are far from satisfied as nothing has really gone their way to this point

  2. Another interesting thing from that article was that Miller’s agent, Bartlett, said they won’t discuss contract once the season starts. Not exactly unexpected but def hurts the possibility of re-signing, which management was open to.

That being said, Miller also did not renew his deal with Basant Motors so looks like he’s safe from the Basant curse 🤔

  3. Im sure the front office wanted to hit some home runs, but…

They’ve hit a few singles, without giving up any hits.

  4. no matter what you think about Benning, it’s clear he deserved to get fired along with TG.

What a travesty that these young players are handcuffed away from real competition because the great hockey minds that be tend to stick with ex players to run teams, when the reality of it is that very far and few between are ex players smart enough in a business and planning sense to actually create competitive teams. Sakic, Yzerman, Rutherford, Davidson sort of seem to be only ones who have had tangible success over the years.

They understand parts of the game that others couldn’t, out of the gate, but their understanding is dated and usually not applicable in todays game.

ex players tend to make better coaches than general managers, and we’re seeing why now.

Let’s all knock on wood that our management can find some sneaky ways to get out of some situations they arent happy with, and into some that we can all be happy about.

  5. Not poor enough for a rebuild and not good enough to be a playoff contender… Not a girl, not yet a woman.
