[Rapoport] Broncos P Sam Martin is being released today by Denver after indicating he would refuse any pay reduction. He was a top 5 punter statistically in 2021 and set Broncos all-time record for net punting last season. Will have interest.

  1. Didn’t see that coming, I wonder if they feel like we need more cap space for something this season?

I hope we stay far far away from Araiza.

  2. Cheaper guy with better hang time wins every time. No secret that he was on the edge, plus he knows there are other teams in need. So why take a cut in salary.

  3. I have a feeling this was the wrong move… hope it doesn’t come back to haunt us like when we dropped Colquitt.

  4. Everyone keeps saying bills, I know why. But why would the bills invest the money on a top five Punter? That’s a lot of money on a guy that only works twice a game.

  5. He knew/knows he held power in the situation given what is going on in Buffalo.

“Either pay me what I want and I will be happy and stay or I will go to a team that is in desperation mode for a punter and is considered a top-tier team anyway…”

  6. Eh at this point I trust Paton and his talent evaluation. They must feel that Waitman can offer similar value for his price

  7. I don’t exactly want him to set any more punting records here… we all know why he did that. Not that it isn’t impressive but yeah…

  8. This tells me we don’t plan on punting very often 🤑

In all honesty though he’s a great punter and I’m sure he’ll get swooped up quick.

  9. Gut feeling is negative on this move but Paton has earned some benefit of the doubt.

  10. Martin is a fine punter. But we sucked last year and had to punt a lot, and often from deep in our own territory. So stats don’t really mean that much. Our ST in general was total ass last year. So if the new staff thinks Waitman is the better choice I’ll take their word for it. I’m hoping if we do have to punt it won’t be from so deep, so hang time and eliminating returns in general is the goal, so it probably makes sense to go this route. Although hopefully we won’t be punting all that much

  11. Let’s be clear: the numbers might suggest otherwise but if you watch the games from his entire tenure in Denver has was mediocre at best. Some of that is absolutely on Tom McMahon, who forced punters to use ineffectual mechanics that have never truly worked in the NFL, but some of it is definitely still on Martin.

We never should have moved on from Marquette King. If McMahon weren’t incompetent and the worst ST coordinator I’ve ever seen in my life he’d still be here.
