[Miami Herald] Miami Marlins again to explore possibly trading pitching for bats this winter

  1. TL;DR:

Marlins would like to spend money in the offseason, but impact bat more likely to be acquired via trade.

Sandy and Eury Perez are considered to be untouchable as trade chips. Any other pitcher is tradeable.

Cabrera is first guy mentioned; his name came up in trade talks last offseason.

Teams are still interested in Rogers despite the regression. But right now he’s definitely a “sell low” guy if the Marlins move him.

The Marlins could still move Pablo. The Yankees rejected the Marlins’ request for Oswald Peraza and Gleyber Torres.

Jake Eder and Dax Fulton are other possible trade chips.

Marlins are deliberately giving a taste of the big leagues to young prospects who have tools but are not yet putting up good numbers. If Bleday, Lewin, Burdick, and Encarnacion don’t hit well for the rest of the season, it would reduce the likelihood that they are seen as viable starters for 2023. See September/October as auditions for them. Bleday most likely of the four to start next year; he has good approach but needs to work on his swing.

Jesus Sanchez is a textbook case of a guy initially putting up decent numbers but failing to make counter-adjustments to pitchers once they figured him out

If Lewin continues to struggle, the Marlins could try Encarnacion at first more.

Mel Stottlemyre Jr.’s contract expires at the end of the season, so his future with the Marlins is uncertain. There have not yet been serious discussions yet about extending him. Seems Mel prefers to wait until the season is over for these talks.

  2. Just make sure Kimmy Kim isn’t the one deciding what bats we want to get this year, thanks!

  3. I think Pablo is the correct one to move in terms of his value and what he provides. He should net an above average regular position player.

  4. Feels like a repeat of last year. Apparently, they plan to spend on bats this offseason but they feel like the majority of the contributors are gonna come via trades.
