Mario wasn’t Canadian, he’s a Sayian from planet Vegeta. He was sent to earth to conquer. He was supposed to land in the US where his natural gifts for war and violence could be nurtured. But he landed off course in Canada and was taught instead to be a good human being and then to use his sayian super powers to embarrass others at hockey.
But seriously. I love this guy. He’s the reason I love hockey. He saved it in my city more times than he should have had to, but he did it. He’s one of the very few athletes I’d consider a real hero. And he did it all with class and grace.

Before I was a Red Wings fan I was a very lost boy in Minnesota that didn’t have a team. I’m told my first big birthday ask was a Penguins Starter Jacket so I could be Mario. I don’t remember it but my first memory, looking back, was building a snowman in that jacket.
