  1. When interleague started, every team got paired with its natural rival (Mets Yanks, for example) pads were paired with Seattle. The only thing San Diego and Seattle have in common is Pearl Jams Eddie Vedder who lived in both cities.

  2. Eddie Vedder grew up and enjoyed surfing in San Diego, but moved up to Seattle around the turn of the 90s to play in a few bands named Temple of the Dog and Pearl Jam. Every year, the Padres and Mariners play interleague games to legally obtain custody of Eddie Vedder for the offseason.

It’s all kind of moot since he was born in Chicago and is a Cubs fan but he doesn’t have a say in the Cup.

  3. It’s a “fake” rivalry.

One of the connections between Seattle and San Diego is Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam. He grew up in San Diego and Pearl Jam was formed in Seattle.

It’s just a fun made up reason to be rivals. We share a spring training facility as well so there’s a good amount of games played against each other despite being in different leagues.

  4. Seattle and San Diego battle over the rights to own eddie vedder despite him being a fan of the Cubs.

  5. I always love questions like this because now I get to make Eddie Vedder puns. And puns don’t get Eddie Vedder than that.

  6. Leroy vedder was a baseball player who played for both San Diego and Seattle. After his playing career ended he spilled a bag of very cold frosties on his lap and ended up suing Wendy’s. Dave Thomas, then owner of the padres, settled out of court and gave Leroy Thomas ownership of the padres.

Leroy’s scorned ex-wife, Wendy (not related to Dave Thomas), married Seattle supersonic, Scottie pippen. They ended up purchasing the marlins during a Black Friday deal.

Leroy and Wendy decided that whoever had a better record between the marlins and padres would get to keep the kids during the holidays. They called it the vedder cup because Eddie vedder lived in both San Diego and Seattle.
