  1. I swapped around the headline b/c it seemed clickbaity (talking about how Canada is quoted saying he likes 2-yd gains, which is what he said but he also says he likes 3-yd & 4-yd gains), and I felt like the other quote gives a better perspective of the current situation

Regardless, article is full of interesting information on Canada’s thoughts on wk 1, and what he is looking towards working on

[Found a video of Canada talking about 3rd downs](https://twitter.com/c_adamskitrib/status/1570440610817126401?s=46&t=KNv73KKp3DpbhuUZwwgLng)

  2. I don’t even know who to blame at this point besides to say the pass protection didn’t look as bad as anticipated in week 1. Run blocking is still unbelievably bad, though.

  3. His offense didn’t work because he didn’t have a mobile QB. Now he has a mobile QB and it still looks bad. Jet sweeps, slants, & quick outs are running their course. I’m sure Belichick will be ready for it, and defenses will continue to stack the box. He needs to roll out Mitch more, which will give him more time to go down the field.

  4. I’ll give Canada the benefit of the doubt since it was week 1 and everyone was still trying to get into a groove. If this trend continues into weeks 4 and 5, that’s when I’m going to be agitated and whip out the pitchfork.

  5. Every DC we face is going to play 8 in the box with LBs coming downhill at the snap unless Trubisky/Canada literally throw them out of that scheme. The OL and Najee can’t handle that kind of pressure because the OL is really bad and that’s a tough assignment regardless. 18 games of Canada’s play design and Mitch’s career to date dont make me optimistic at all they can do that effectively.

  6. Winning offenses score and losing ones worry about converting on third down. Its too early to diagnose but our run game was fucked on Sunday.

  7. Getting the feel that Canada is all onboard the train Pickett but Tomlin isn’t yet and in Canadas mind the offense is as handcuffed as it was last year.

  8. If you can’t establish the run, you will lose.

If you can’t stretch the defense, you can’t run.

  9. This motherfucker already starting with the, ‘well if we would have hit those third downs…blah blah blah. You didn’t hit those. And some of that has to do with your play calling. Yes you have to get better and here’s hoping you do.

  10. The roster on offense, especially the line, isn’t great. No coordinator is going to magically make those guys into pro bowlers. Fans hate to see the team struggle and need some type of action to placate them and firing the coach who calls the offensive plays is the simplest thing to do. You fire a guy if the offense struggles with great players, not with one of the worst O lines in pro football.

  11. So I just watched Moats breaking down some of the 3rd down failures, and there is plenty of blame to go around. But one thing he noted other than o line and play calling, was receivers not winning one on ones, and Mitch not being accurate or decisive enough.

I’ll be patient, but if it is still a ugly struggle against the jets then I’ll start to really worry.

  12. Friendly reminder that Todd Haley’s offense was bottom half of the league his first two years as OC too

  13. He’s not wrong. If they convert on even 2 or 3 of their 3rd down chances the narrative is different.

The problem is they no longer have one of the greatest 3rd down QBs of all-time back there. Every QB on the roster is going to struggle on 3rd down compared to Ben. So they need to get more yards on 1st and 2nd down to make it easier on Mitch on 3rd down.

But when you can’t run the ball, that’s not exactly an easy task.

And yeah, it’s been one game. Everyone involved in the offense is allowed to get better. And they will.

  14. Say what you want about him as a coach but I love listening to him talk. There’s just something about his voice that’s so calming.

I hope this was just week one lack of chemistry, but if we convert a few of those third downs we don’t end up in OT. Granted, we didn’t but if we start making those we can really start to control the ball and then unleash our defense.

  15. Someone has to want to be the next hard ass, third down, clutch master Hines Ward. Looking at you Claypool.

  16. I remember hearing a broadcast where Booger McFarland said something like “the Steelers love to get you in third and long situations…” and people were meme-ing it so hard afterward like, “yeah the Steelers and…every other team in the NFL Booger.”

I feel like that also applies here. “Things sure would look a lot better if we start converting on thirds downs! He he heeee” … “Uh, yeah.. no shit dude.”

  17. Do you know what? Maybe you’ll hit more first downs if you use the middle of the field, or throw beyond the sticks, or challenge the defense deep at least once in a blue moon.

The excuse given all year last year, and all off-season was that he didn’t have a mobile quarterback. OK. No longer a problem. We have two of them.

And yet they throw short of the sticks, ignore the middle of the field, and don’t go deep.

You can’t just blame the offensive line. You can’t. There were a number of times where we had enough pass pro to either use the middle of the field or throw deep or throw beyond the sticks, and we still didn’t.

There are multiple instances on film where the team had plenty of time to throw beyond the sticks, throw downfield, or use the middle of the field, and we didn’t.

Sometimes the difference between throwing beyond the sticks and throwing short was just a couple of yards. There’s no excuse for the complete incompetence.

Two completely different quarterbacks, with completely different styles, neither of them have been able so far, Roethlisberger or Trubisky, to throw beyond the sticks, use the middle of the field, or challenge deep. Two completely different quarterbacks with completely different skill sets.

I’ve been holding back but I can’t any longer. Until Canada proves otherwise, and maybe he will, maybe I will be wrong, I would love to be wrong – He’s a complete failure.

I’m still completely flummoxed as to how in the fucking world they thought bringing him back was a good idea. Tomlin is squarely responsible for bringing back Canada, as was reported repeatedly in different outlets. I love Tomlin, but this makes no sense to me. None.

  18. You don’t design an offense for third down conversions you idiot. Sure you need to covert them, but this is the same scaredy cat close to the vest bullshit U shaped offense that Tomlin loves. Canada + Tomlin is a dangerously BAD coaching duo. Expect some boring ass football on offense for the next 16 weeks.

  19. Annnnnnnddd THAT’S what’s concerning.

That if they had hit just one or two of those 3rd down conversions, they’d think everything was looking up. Meanwhile they are constantly struggling to even get to those 3rd and short situations. And then, struggle even worse to convert them.

The problem is the overall situation. Not that you didn’t get that extra 1 or 2 bailout conversion. You need to stop being in situations like that non-stop, requiring your team to perform above your play-calling in order to keep a drive alive.

I watch other games, and teams like KC, Den, Sea, even the game last nite with SD/KC, and it just looks… so much easier. No, they aren’t just marching up and down the field punching in TDs every possession. They get stopped, there are mistakes, there are punts. But compared to what I watch week in, week out with this Canada Offense the past season and 1st game… It looks like they are pulling teeth simply to muster 10 yards every 3 plays. Every possession.

Like how Najee’s stats last season were some of the hardest yards I’ve ever seen an NFL player get. It had to take 3 years off his career. That’s what this Canada O looks like, feels like every game. It just wears me out. Just for a change I’d like to see some success coming from a well-designed play or scheme. Instead, I see guys out there scrapping for their lives to cobble together single-digit yard gains. Or worse, have to start battling from 5 yards behind their own line of scrimmage in unblocked run plays or crappy negative pass routes.

    *sigh*

  20. all I know is that we were posting these same discussions a year ago about the offense. How long til we run out of excuses for Canada to use
