[Brooks] Nils Lundqvist to Dallas for top-10 protected 2023 first rounder. Confirmed. If it’s top 10 pick rolls over to 2024 without restriction. Could be another component coming to NYR.

  1. That’s a solid deal. 2023 draft seems like it’s going to be a great one, and even with the top 10 protection I think there’s a decent shot the pick conveys in the late lottery. Getting another piece would be a cherry on top. [Seems like that extra piece is a conditional 4th per Shayna.] (https://twitter.com/hayyyshayyy/status/1572009193384599555)

Edit: [And that extra pick is a 2025 4th, becoming a 3rd if Nils scores 55 points over the next 2 seasons.](https://twitter.com/MDeFranks/status/1572019462647185409)

Better work than I expected to be completely honest.

  2. It’s not a waste of an asset if you get a good return even if he doesn’t play for you.

These are the kinds of moves that we’ve needed to make to deal with the glut of graduating prospects, glad to see we did it

  3. I’ve been watching the Rangers my entire life, if there’s one thing I know for sure it’s that he’s gonna score on us the first time we play the Stars.

  4. Drury is like a cat, perpetually falling towards the tub of wasting assets, but time after time he does some weird cat antigravity parkour shit and recovers.

This return couldn’t get much better without being worse

  5. Got back what we spent for him which is good just annoys me these kids after a year . Demanding to be traded and not coming to camp if he asked for a trade but came to camp showed his value and earned the trade . I would have more respect but I have no respect for these spoiled brat error coming into the sport of if I don’t get what I want I don’t play .

Here’s my logic: Dallas is pretty mid. If they continue to be mid, we get a mid first round pick in a stacked 2023 draft. If they collapse, the pick likely ends up in the top 10 and we get their unprotected 2024 1st – and I think if Dallas ends up collapsing that hard they might just blow it up, leaving us an unprotected pick whose position is based on the play of a rebuilding team.

Unless Dallas does another 2020 playoff run we’re going to get a higher value pick than the one we used to pick Nils in the first place.

  7. Honestly, this is an ideal return. It basically amounts to a do-over, and that’s fine with me. If nothing else, it’s ammo for the trade deadline.

  8. I fully expect nils to be a good player in this league. I think they did as well as they could have considering. Can’t blame him for wanting a trade when two of the guys in front of you are signed for the next 5 years minimum and the other guy locked down his slot and is younger then you. I hope Dallas has the 11 worst year and nils is great for them.

  9. Should I be happy we got a decent return considering the situation, or angry that we botched another prospect relationship leading to this situation?

  10. I was gonna go to the rangers game against Dallas in October.

Now, I don’t want to go to see nils with a 4 point night against us

  11. Honestly a bit surprised this didn’t drag out for another couple of weeks or more. To have it resolved before training camp started *and* for a solid return…

  12. Excellent return for a guy that’s very likely a bust, and it eliminates a malcontent that we have no room for. Glad to see this deal done.

  13. That’s a W for us. I did not expect a 1st in return at all and Dallas should be good enough to avoid the Top-10 imo

  14. Great asset management imo. Obviously Nils could break out and make us regret it, but based on current projections I’d say this is a really good deal. We drafted Nils late first round and now we get a potential mid first rounder while clearing the RD logjam.

  15. I was harsh on Drury last week, but this is a total rippoff. The guy has done absolutely nothing and has proven only one thing, he has a shit, entitled, attitude.

Getting this return is really a great job on his part.

  16. Think it’s a win win for both teams. Nils will get more of a chance with the Stars than he ever would with the Rangers and wouldn’t be surprised to see him be the Powerplay QB for them. He was impressive in the SHL and understand why he wanted a chance to thrive elsewhere and not waste another year in Hartford. The bust label gets thrown on him after being stapled to Nemeth and we all saw how he was shown the door, so he never had a chance.

For the Rangers – with Fox, Trouba and Schneider they are set on the right side and Robertson can slide in if injuries occur. They now have a trade deadline piece they can dangle for an upgrade if the season goes to plan. With this being a solid draft they could walk away with an even better prospect.

Really wish the Rangers were able to pry away one of Johnston, Bourque or Stankhoven as the Rangers still lack a solid center prospect to call up if need be.

Overall- Stars get someone they can slot into their top 4 most likely and the Rangers get a high pick for someone who wanted out. People who scream this was a heist for the Rangers are the HFboards armchair gms that only value unproven draft picks that likely won’t be a factor for another 3 to 4 years.

  17. I suppose I should prepare myself now for this pick, and NYR’s own, to both be used at the TDL for rentals. Otherwise, I’ll likely be real pissed about it in six months.
