The 2022-23 Red Wings hit the ice for the first time for Training Camp on the morning of Thursday, Sept. 22, and continue daily through Monday, Sept. 26. Red Wings players, prospects and tryouts will be divided into teams that will practice and scrimmage throughout camp, including the annual Red and White Game on Sunday, Sept. 25. Big question: How good will Detroit be with its new additions?

Red Wings’ general manager Steve Yzerman came to slay this offseason. He signed Andrew Copp, Dominik Kubalik and David Perron up front, added Ben Chiarot to the blue line and Ville Husso to complement Alex Nedeljkovic in net. Yzerman also made his first head-coaching hire in Detroit, replacing Jeff Blashill with Derek Lalonde. The new bench boss has plenty of fresh talent to start with. Where will it all take the Red Wings?

Last season, it was Detroit’s defensive deficiencies that stood out. The Red Wings allowed the second-most goals against in the league (3.78 per game) and the fifth-most shots (33.7). Addressing and improving that area will be critical from the outset for Lalonde, and the new guys should be an asset in doing so. Perron and Copp are both solid two-way players who will lead by example on the defensive side. Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin will also want a return to form in that area, after posting a 2.95 expected goals against in 2021-22.

Then there’s Husso. He was a stud in the regular season for St. Louis last season and now has a chance to be Detroit’s No. 1 in a tandem with Nedeljkovic. Detroit had a cumulative save percentage below .900 a year ago (Nedeljkovic was at .901) and Husso should push that number up. If he does, and if those other new players come out firing, Detroit could be flying high. — Shilton/ESPN

  4. It looks like tickets are sold out for the red and white game but may be available at the door. Has anyone had luck doing that or buying from scalpers?

The GM continues to reference the fact that Simon Edvinsson is only 19, and he tells

that Edvinsson must be in the top six and play on special teams to some extent.

Bluntly, it sounds like Cossa did a lot of work with Red Wings goaltending coach Phil Osaer over the summer and that he’s refined his style. Evident in terms of his patience, poise, and resolve.

asks Yzerman about Cossa, and he says that Cossa needs to play games, and that he needs to be playing a lot in whatever environment he’s playing in. He’s not certain where he’ll play but the prospect tournament was good, camp, preseason…They’ll figure it out.

  7. Kulfan’s notebook: Yzerman weighs in on Berggren, Edvinsson and other young players

The Detroit News’s Ted Kulfan filed an evening notebook in which he discusses more highlights of Steve Yzerman’s pre-training camp press conference, and among Kulfan’s topics of interest are Yzerman’s remarks regarding the Red Wings’ younger players:

Forward Jonatan Berggren, 22, had 21 goals and 43 assists with the Griffins, and could be in consideration for an NHL roster spot with a good training camp.

“Jonatan had an outstanding year,” Yzerman said. “He adjusted well. I saw him in Detroit last week and he’s in excellent shape. He quietly went about his business (last season) and did well. I’m very interested to see him in the preseason. He’s an interesting one. He’s worked real hard and I’m real happy with his attitude and determination. He’s one for all of us to follow closely.”

Defenseman Simon Edvinsson, 19, the Wings’ 2021 first-round draft pick, will be in the running for a roster spot with the Wings. But Yzerman stressed Edvinsson’s age and North American pro inexperience are factors.

“Moritz (Seider) had the benefit of playing a year in the AHL (with Grand Rapids) and going over during the pandemic to Sweden and got an extra year of development before he stepped in,” Yzerman said. “Simon has a good chance, but I can’t sit here and definitively say he’ll be in the lineup on opening night.”

Yzerman wants to make sure Edvinsson is playing regularly this season, and playing in different situations.

“I don’t want him in and out of the lineup and not getting an opportunity on special teams, at least of the units,” Yzerman said. “We’ll figure out which level he’s ready for.”

Continued; we forget about Jonatan Berggren at our peril!

  8. Bultman notes that Yzerman’s still bullish on Zadina’s potential

Wrapping up today’s coverage of Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman’s pre-training camp press conference is The Athletic’s Max Bultman, who noted that Yzerman gave rare praise to a player that some have written off already in Filip Zadina:

In many ways, you could say Zadina already earned a stamp of approval from his GM earlier this summer, when the Red Wings inked the winger to a three-year contract.

But Yzerman was clear Wednesday in his belief that Zadina is “on the right path to becoming a real good player in the NHL.”

“He’s learning to do the little things well, even if you’re not scoring,” Yzerman said. “All young players, all scorers in particular, always measure yourself on goals and assists, production. And it’s always — whether you’re playing junior, whether you’re playing in the American league, in the NHL, and in particular for these higher draft picks — everybody wants to see the goals and assists, measure (them) in goals and assists. And you fall into that yourself, thinking, ‘I’ve gotta produce, I’ve gotta produce.’ Ultimately, if you do all the other things well, the pucks will go in the net for you.”

Yzerman delivered that message to Zadina, telling him to keep working at those little things and that if he did, the pucks would find their way into the net.

“And he’s a hard worker,” Yzerman said. “When I talked to our staff, our strength coaches and whatnot — his dedication off the ice. He really wants to be a good player and knows he’s got things to improve upon. But again, I expect him to take another step forward, and I think his attitude is excellent, his work ethic is excellent. He just needs to stick with it.”

Continued (paywall); we’ll find out whether Zadina’s still got some “boom” in that “bust” this season. I’m not willing to write him off, either.
