**Shohei Ohtani Scouts Guardians’ Japanese Outfielder Kwan to Samurai Japan “Wouldn’t you like to play for the Japan National Team?”**

> Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani seems to be playing a role as an “international scout” for the Japanese baseball team “Samurai Japan”. Before the game with the Guardians on the 12th (13th Japan time) the day before, he chatted with Japanese-American outfielder Stephen Kwan. Otani’s participation in the WBC has not yet been officially decided, but he seems to be very interested in the trends of Japanese players from other teams, and Kwan revealed that Otani asked him, “Are you going to play as a representative of Japan?” In the WBC, if conditions such as blood ties are met, countries with different nationalities can participate. Kwan, 25, whose maternal grandparents are from Yamagata, is keen to join Samurai Japan. He says he has already made contact with Samurai Japan officials. “I also talked to people from the Japanese team. It’s an honor.” “I told Shohei the same thing. If they (Samurai Japan) want it, I’ll be happy to play. But I haven’t heard anything yet, so I’m waiting.” If he joins Samurai Japan, Otani will be a good big brother for 25-year-old Kwan. When I told Kwan that Ohtani was also interested in joining Samurai Japan, he began to get excited. “Oh my God! It’s an honor just to stand on the same field as an opponent. I can’t imagine playing with him. I’m sure you’ll learn a lot. Just playing. It will be special just by looking at it.” Samurai Japan manager Hideki Kuriyama has visited the United States for inspection and hinted at the call-up of Japanese major leaguers. Otani’s colleague, outfielder Mike Trout, recruited players from other teams to form a dream team for the US national team. Each country is putting effort into team formation. Samurai Japan has no choice but to create the strongest lineup. The “man who never misses” who represents the majors wants to carry the Hinomaru on his back and fight with Otani.

  1. You know what that means…..sorry Angels fans!

*Also my half Chinese side wanted to say Japan doesn’t get to solely claim Kwan as their own as Kwan is also half Chinese lol

  2. Yeah…gotta agree would be fun to watch him play for Japan. I wonder if Eli Morgan will play for Israel.

  3. Also it seems Japan or at least that site has given Kwan the nickname of “Man Who Never Misses” or “Karaburi o shinai otoko”

  4. You’re telling me there might be a Stevie Kwan Japan WBC jersey?? I still have my Lindor Puerto Rico jersey. I’d buy Steve’s in an instant

  5. Man, I love that the WBC is getting big name players this year for all the teams. Should be fun!

  6. Asian American here – don’t play for Japan play for US. Kwan still got a lot of potential, give it some time he’ll probably make the cut. It’d be amazing to see some representation for team America
