Steve Young criticizes Shanahan’s use of Trey Lance for so many “dangerous” designed runs

He acknowledged that designed quarterback runs — ones that come “out of the huddle” — are dangerous and had concerns about the way Trey Lance was used last season in Arizona, when he ran 16 times, nine of them up the middle by design. He sustained a knee sprain in that game.

“Look, it’s football, and running quarterbacks out of the huddle is dangerous,” Young said. “And remember last year when Trey played against the Cardinals, I think he ran him 13 times out of the huddle. I mean, we all kind of, [thought], ‘Really, is that what we’re doing?’”

  1. Personally I will always respect what Steve Young has to say since he’s probably my favorite player of all time, but I disagree with a lot of takes he’s had on this situation.

  2. Uh oh. Juice is going to have to break out a freshman math class lesson on Steve if he keeps this up.

(seriously though Juice was tripping trying to compare injury probabilities to flipping a coin)

  3. I think most of us don’t mind Trey running sometimes in certain situations, but it’s the amount of hard runs he’s doing. We also rarely saw play action or rolling out of the pocket throws. Which just seemed super odd with the play calling Shanahan was using.

  4. I don’t think anyone is against him doing designed runs it’s just the quantity that he does it in for comparison Josh Allen averages 7 runs a game last season Lamar averaged 11 last season in the few games Lance started he averaged 14 that’s kind of an issue especially since he isn’t as efficient as Lamar or Allen

  5. I think it’s important to keep in mind that the 49ers are a better team this year with Jimmy as the starter.

  6. Kyle damn near sabotaged Trey Lance. I was all for a running offense. Plays like that triple option were awesome. However, it honestly felt like Trey was being blatantly put in harms way multiple times per drive!

Trey may have been equally bad at protecting himself, but damn I’ve never seen a QB get lit up so often. We all saw it except Shanahan? What the hell was that rinky dink offense. Trey was money down the field for the most part and was on pace to throw like 12 times a game unless we were playing catch up. Just annoying we can’t be a normal team some times.

  7. It feel like Kyle finally got his hand on a new specimen but doesn’t know how or what to do with him because he’s clueless where to start. (This most likely isn’t true but seem like it).

Try showcase he can throw and those that say he isn’t accurate is just nitpicking. He’s raw and with the speed of the NFL players, it even harder, so it is a learning in progress. That said, he pretty damn good for being the so raw and inexperienced playing in the NFL.

  8. Of course. Lots of Shanahan apologists have been saying “football is violent”, etc. And Trey’s injury was a “freak accident”. Yeah, bullshit. Anybody who watched him play, dating back to the Cardinal game in ’21 cringed hard at the brutal hits he took on poorly designed runs. Shanahan ran his blue chip QB up the gut irresponsibly and wasted the potential 3 1st round picks could have had on a super bowl caliber team. I still respect Kyle for his play calling and intelligence but…quit with the horseshit.

  9. When Steve says,

“I mean, we all kind of, [thought], ‘Really, is that what we’re doing?’”

I feel that, man. Most of us all would of loved to see him sling the rock a bit more and maneuver in the pocket. I personally don’t mind the designed runs, but you have to do it in moderation. If the intention is to give the guy reps, you gotta let him work. It was really frustrating watching designed runs on 3rd and long

  10. I think everyone agrees running Trey occasionally is necessary to keep defenses honest and take advantage of his athleticism. It could also be that Trey likes running the ball and it could help get him into the flow of a game early. But I would like to see him run less and throw more and us to utilize all the running backs we keep drafting.

  11. Okay then be prepared to lose games. Because Trey can’t get easy, short completions consistently.

People think of Trey as he’s probably like in Madden and not based on the tape we’ve seen. Beyond that, you don’t think Shanahan knows the most about Trey given he sees him daily in practice?

  12. I think anyone watching these games knew that you couldn’t run him in this specific way without eventually hurting the kid. For everyone who says that he was drafted to run this way- doesn’t that seem like an incredibly stupid idea? He’s clearly not built to run up the gut. Sure seems like KS either needed to give him time to develop as a passer or he drafted the wrong guy to be a running back. Either way KS screwed this up.

  13. If you watch treys college days there are runs where he uses himself like battering ram. That’s what’s shanny saw and why we hired him. Maybe he thought he will be a RB/QB but he was wrong.
Idk what’s the deal here. All sports have this. You hire someone you thought will do the job but then he can’t

  14. Watch Hurts play – fast, outside the taco qb running plays where he slides, play action and boot legs. Shanny didn’t do ANY of that. How the fuck was Trey not doing any play action with how well our run game was going.
