game notes for today:
– something i’m excited about is a stat i created called wEZR. pronounced “wheezer”, it measures how effective a pitcher is at working in the zone (that’s why it’s called weighted to effective zone rating). also it correlates well with both ERA and FIP, and factors in zone contact rate, walk rate, and barrel rate. anything above 9 is elite, between 9 and 7 is very good, between 7 and 3 is good, 3 to 1 is above average, between 1 and -1 is average, -1 to -3 is below average, between -3 and -7 is bad, -7 to -9 is very bad, and anything lower than -9 likely means a player is nowhere near a big league roster
– wEZR isn’t the holy grail of pitching stats, but it’s a useful way to see who is able to be most effective with throwing strikes. among all pitchers (min 20 IP), fairbanks ranks in the 100th percentile in wEZR at 9.95. among pitchers who have thrown at least 100 IP, mcclanahan has the highest rating at 4.6. today’s starter for the blue jays, ross stripling, has an average wEZR of -0.125
