‘I want a team that competes’: Jazz enter training camp with new expectations

I’d like a good fan to help me understand how this team is going to compete and tank at the same time. Why should I buy the jazz games this year?

  1. Competing doesn’t mean winning. You can have a team that wants to win and plays well and still loses. That’d a best case scenario for us.

The reverse is true too. You can have a team that’s not competitive that wins a lot. A la the jazz last season. Apathy is infectious in locker rooms.

  2. My view still is that the Jazz are not actively trying to tank this season and they don’t really have to. They have set themselves up with enough draft assets and young talent from the trades this offseason to rebuild on the fly for the next several years, regardless of their record.

So what that means is that this extremely young and new Jazz team can go out there and compete and TRY to win every night. That doesn’t mean this group will win immediately but that won’t be because they are actively trying to avoid winning, like OKC has been doing in years past. If you watched the interviews you could tell that the common sentiment from the team is they want to be a team that competes on both sides and is very tough to play. A lot of them mentioned how much they want to win and some mentioned that they have heard what others are saying about what the team is going to be and wants to prove people wrong. Seems like they are going to have that underdog mentality and all of our players have a lot to prove individually to show they deserve to be in the NBA. Plus there’s a lot of young players that we got who fans should be stoked to see if they can turn into something! Kessler, Ochai, Sexton, Fontecchio, Beasley, Butler, etc… Not to mention how Coach Hardy will do in his first year, what offense/defense he implements and how players respond to him.

If for some reason this young team with a new coach and system magically clicks, starts to overachieve and one of our players like Sexton, Markkenen, Ochai, etc.. turn into star players immediately, the Jazz are going to be completely fine with that because they have enough trade assets to retool around a star player if they need to and still have multiple picks in the draft next year.

If this young team likely ends up competing hard but still having natural growing pains and struggles in their first year, then they’re probably going to win around 20-30 games this season and be a backend lottery team. That’s totally fine and still a win for the Jazz because they will have a lottery pick as well as two other picks in the draft.

If you come away from this not excited or interested in watching the Jazz this season than I don’t know what to tell you. Because after watching the epic ways the Jazz failed to live up to expectations, flopped in the playoffs the last several years and where the vibes felt horrible all of last year. I can’t wait to watch a new coach and all of these young players come in and build a new and better contending team.

  3. Jazz isn’t tanking that is just fans who keep spouting that lie. How good will this team be in 22-23 season nobody can say, everyone will just have to wait for the season to start. I am fan of Lauri and followed from Bulls –> Cavs –> now Jazz. And last season everybody was saying Cavs will suck, but Cavs didn’t suck and now all are so hyped about them with Donovan trade. Lauri was a big part of Cavs success last season even if his own game wasn’t his best. My guess this team will surprise a lot of people, but with young players it’s always when they need to win, usually lack of experience comes to bite them in the ass and they will be just one spot away from playoffs is my guess. So possible playoff spot or close to it will be this season Utah Jazz.

  4. Being a diehard Jazz fan pushing 4 decades and having so many close personal ties and interactions with the organization over that time, this season will be painful, but in a good way, like getting a bad tooth pulled. I’m excited for the rebuild and ready to Bear Down through the pain while picking up Johnson and Markkanen jerseys. Let’s hope for less than 20 wins.

  5. Competing means vastly different things depending on roster make-up.

A team with experienced veterans, competing often means winning.

A team with young players, competing means showing up to work every day, improving, earning more playing time, earning a better contract, and eventually playing in meaningful games.

I believe our roster will be comprised mostly of young players.
