Full Week 5 PFF Grades: Offense/Defense & O-Line pressures

  1. Things that caught my eye:

Our offensive line gave up pressure on 61% of the pass blocking snaps. Last year, which many regard as the worst OL we’ve ever had, we never had a single game where we’ve given up pressure on 61% of our snaps or more. Same goes for 2019 and 2020. We’ve seen Tannehill have a couple games approaching that pressure rate from 2015-2018 and he looked horrific, much less a rookie QB taking his first snaps ever.

Skylar Thompson ended up with a 58.2 grade. I thought it’d be lower, but again, considering the pressure he was dealing with amongst other bad circumstances, I guess it isn’t too surprising.

Brandon Shell and Greg Little ended up with a 15 and 27.9 pass blocking grade respectively. I can’t really blame Shell considering he signed up with the team like a week or two ago, and suddenly got thrust into this situation, but yeesh. As for Greg Little, PFF has him grading out far worse than Jesse Davis, and it showed last game.

We pressured Zach Wilson 4 times. Once again, we have a huge problem pressuring the QB. I guess overall it wasn’t a massive issue since we were gashed so much on the ground, and our offense was terrible, but it’s a recurring theme where a DL so many of us were high about has one of the worst pressure rates in the league.

Cedrick Wilson only played 16 snaps. I know he’s had the injury excuse for prior games, but this week leading up to this game, he was a full participant for every practice. He only ended up playing in 24% of our snaps. His snap count for the four games he’s played in are as followed: 46.7%, 31%, 11%, and 24%. He also has 40 yards in the four games he’s played for us. This has arguable been a worse signing than franchising Mike Gesicki.

Speaking of Mike Gesicki, he played in 54% of our snaps. One catch for 30 yards. Between Mike Gesicki and Cedrick Wilson, that’s about 18-19M in salary that’s sparsely being used on the field. Imagine if we had used that money to shore up the OL?

Jaelen Phillips and Emmanual Ogbah have been the invisible brothers for most of the season. They have 12 and 11 pressures a piece, respectively. One sack each. I shudder to think about how much those pressures would decrease if we didn’t run zero blitz at the highest rate in the league.

Overall we might need a defensive overhaul. Maybe a scheme change. Going back to last season, our top defense has always been a bit of a mirage. Whenever we faced good offenses, for the most part we always sucked. We stats were propped up heavily by facing bad offenses and capitalizing on those QBs that do not know how to handle zero blitz. We may even go on a decent stretch on defense soon considering we face Kenny Pickett, Jared Goff, Justin Fields, Jacoby Brissett, and Davis Mills in 5 of our next 6 games. But if we were to get to the playoffs, we’d likely get exposed by a team with a good offense.

We’ve had a serious problem in generating pressure with our DL, but the zero blitz has covered that up for a while. Even when we had Byron and X last year, our defense got torched in a similar way through the first 7 or so weeks of the season. Something needs to change.

  2. We really need replacements for Eich and Little. Jackson we need you back ASAP. Grier, trade away Gesicki and draft capital. We *cannot* continue to start OL that are this bad if we want a winning season.

  3. Phillips and Ogbah are the most disappointing to me. I feel like unless we blitz we are hardly ever getting pressure on the opposing QB. With both corners out they need to step up.

The line is disappointing but with armstead and Jackson out it makes a little more sense. Solid offensive lineman are tough to find these days let alone having solid depth. Liam has been disappointing this year. I really expected him to take a somewhat positive turn.

I know the defensive performance wasn’t great but I still contend that if Tua had been playing the defensive performance would have seemed much better. Time on the field and field position would have been huge differences for them.

  4. Tanner Conner. Why? I hope I’m remembering this correctly: he dropped an easy completion on 3rd down right before the FG miss? I think he would’ve gotten a first down. At the very least Sanders is 8 yards closer. To me, that was the biggest play of the game. As soon as Sanders missed I knew the game was over. Anyone else get that football sixth sense feeling about a play or turning point? Anyway, I could not hate more the fact that it’s week 5 and a game hinged on Tanner Conner catching a pass from Skylar Thompson.

  5. Bridgewater graded higher than Skylar even tho his only play was an intentional grounding for a safety. Oof.

  6. This sub needs to pump the breaks on Holland a bit too. There’s talks in this sub about him being a top 5 safety. He hasn’t shown that at all this year. He’s missing a bunch of routine tackles this year, not wrapping up. For a guy that has a ball hawking trait he hasn’t been around the ball at all this year. Certainly doing a lot more chasing instead of creating turnovers. I know he’s a fan favorite, but it’s okay to criticize some of our better players.

This pass rush is insanely bad. They brought in two rotational guys to help out with Flowers and Ingram. Phillips and Ogbah have done absolutely nothing. If we’re not sending 5 or 6 guys nobody is getting to the quarterback.

  7. Greg Little might as well change his position to “Most Recent OL injured”. He has a bad grade, but damn that man has played just about every position on the OL.

Terron Armstead isn’t what we paid for. He’s been downright bad.

  8. Raekwon Davis is a bust. Phillips is a bust thus far outside a few good games last year. Nobody knows how to tackle. Why does Connor get any playing time at all?

  9. I was a bit surprised at how hard the team melted down in the 4th quarter, even with Skylar. After that fumble I turned the game off and watched the Falcons get cucked for a little while instead.

I really think there needs to be a defensive overhaul next year. Boyer sucks and his defense has been ass all season. The two star corners are getting older and are injury prone. Why we ever restructured Byron is beyond me and re-upping on Howard was fucking dumb with how many games he misses. I know everyone is clamoring for early O-line picks (like always) but corner is a serious pitfall on this roster.

Zach Wilson didn’t have to do jackshit all game and we barely touched him. I’m so disappointed in our pass rush. For all of the fabled depth at the position, the only serviceable player there so far has been Melvin Ingram. Ogbah hasn’t done shit, Phillips is in the Charles Harris School of “Almost There”, and if I see one more fucking comment about how “underrated” Van Ginkel is then I’m going goblin mode.

I hope this game shuts up all the mouthbreathing idiots that somehow though Skylar would be a more viable QB2 than Teddy based off a nice preseason. I think he can grow to be a decent backup QB but he’s not there yet, full stop. If Teddy is out next week, I wouldn’t be surprised if we bring in a veteran there. AJ McCarron season….? 🙁

No fucking idea why Gesicki is still on this roster if Tanner Connor is getting the 3rd down target in a critical spot. I like McDaniel a lot but wtf man. Smythe is the only decent -actual- tight end we have right now so I’m glad we extended him.

I’m not as down on the O-line as everyone else is since these games happen and I’m not gonna let one shit game ruin what’s been an alright season from them to this point. Put whatever good energy you have to contribute into Armstead’s tootsies I guess.

Ultimately this was a pretty bad loss but all expectations for me went out the window when Teddy went down and it became a “well fuck it, let’s see how this works out”. The loss was annoying but it didn’t ruin my day like some of our bad losses have. I was angry giggling at Michael Carter doing the Waddle Dance but hey, that’s division rivalry and honestly, they deserved it and we got exposed after getting fellated for weeks. The Jets are definitely better than I thought they were going to be but I still think Zach Wilson sucks enough to limit how much they’re gonna do this year. I feel like they’ll go 9-8 and still end up 3rd in the division. If he develops into a serviceable QB then they’re gonna be scary.

Fuck this game, fuck the Jets, hope Tua can count on both hands this week. Fins up.
