[Kozora] I generally loathe the word “predictable” when it comes to coaches but there’s no other way to describe Matt Canada’s offense. Bland. Boring. Predictable. Vs the Bills, he called the same concept seven times on 1st and 10 between his 20 and the +48.

  1. Maybe we can hire a real coordinator this offseason. Bargain basement hires get you bargain basement results.

  2. Not a single route concept to the middle of the field, actually mind-boggling how we’re supposed to win football games when we don’t use 40% of the field.

  3. Ya, he seems to have taken “rinse & repeat” off the shampoo bottle & tried to integrate it into the offense.

The other infuriating thing is how we’ll just abruptly stop doing anything that’s been working well for us. This was done during the Jets game, when the up tempo offense was doing really well, then boom, just completely abandoned for zero reason.

It was done again against Buffalo when letting Kenny throw on 1st & 2nd down had been at least moving ball, then bam, abandoned to return to run run pass punt, run run pass punt.

  4. Kozora continued to say about Canada’s offense:

[- #1’s run vertical, break route based on leverage/coverage. – #2 runs bender – TE/RB check release into flat All 3×1. Five out of 11 personnel. No window dressing. All looks the same. Twice he called them two out of three snaps. Second call resulted in INT & sack. This sucks.](https://twitter.com/alex_kozora/status/1580268538010271744?s=46&t=SBEIShEw9WLFGikMoEsLPA)

[Of his 1st and 10 passes from the -1 to +45, this call made up 41.1% of them. This play and his sprintout (writing about that tomorrow) made up 35.1% of *all* 1st and 2nd down passes Sunday. This offense runs about five concepts. None of them any good.](https://twitter.com/alex_kozora/status/1580269531653492736?s=46&t=SBEIShEw9WLFGikMoEsLPA)

  5. Yeah and I can’t stand when he bunches the receivers in and then runs the ball for a gain of -3. Najee either going for 3 or going back for 3

  6. Mitch should be eating these losses. Matt Canada is not going to make Kenny’s already botched rookie year any better. The sooner we realize his best stuff is a day late and a yard short the better chance we have of coaxing the best out of Kenny.

  7. What’s frustrating is that Pittsburgh is one of the premier franchises that would get a good OC a lot of buzz and praise. But this franchise bargain hunts for shitty OCs, when there’s a lot of young talent who’d jump at the opportunity.

  8. If a booze-guzzling couch-riding fan like me can diagnose every play before it happens on tv, professional defensive coordinators can tear it to shreds. Our offense is not lacking in talent, but it is completely devoid of creativity and ingenuity. Canada’s schemes suck.

  9. On the bright side, Canada is all but guaranteed to be gone after the season. I know most want him fired now but I’m not holding my breath because this team rarely fires coaches during the season.

My main concern for next season is that the team will continue its recent trend of hiring from within, which means Mike Sullivan is likely going to be Canada’s replacement. I have nothing against Sullivan and don’t know much about his potential strategy but I hope the team seriously considers options outside of the organization.

  10. Kozora has mentioned before that we only really run a handful of plays on offense. Of course, the fact the offense can be so simple, so predictable, and STILL not have perfect execution is utterly ridiculous. I do wonder if some part of the reasoning for why we don’t do more on offense is that the players are just not capable of executing one well

  11. I mean… what else are you going to run with a rookie QB who is making his first legit start. You have to make the game processable to him. Sure that makes it a more predictable offense. But that’s where the receivers need to step up. I’m not defending Canada, continuing to run against stacked boxes in a game where the Bills were specifically looking to take out the run game. But let’s take a moment to understand Kenny is a rookie. Sure he’s looked good out there, but I can’t in good faith blame the OC for giving Kenny easy reads and an ability to get his feet wet without overloading him too much. I fully expect this offense to not overcomplicate shit for Kenny until after the bye. I’m also not sure if Canada makes it that long.

  12. Watching Andy Reid’s offense when they played the Raiders Monday night really put things in perspective. They don’t even look like they are playing the same game. Now I understand what Tomlin was talking about last year when he said they had “shot all their shots”. Maybe What we’re seeing really is all Canada has in his playbook or what he is comfortable calling. The question I have is why wasn’t this addressed in the offseason if it’s basically the same thing we are seeing from last year.
