[JT O’Sullivan] Jalen Hurts and the Eagles continue to struggle with having consistent hot answers. Again, in this game there are a few examples of either Hurts missing it, someone not running hot, or getting a bit lucky.

  1. 5 weeks in and it seems like the team doesn’t actually use hots. It has generally been *ok* so far but it’s definitely an area where Hurts & the offense can improve.

  2. Yeah this is going to become a problem as long as teams realize we’re weak against the blitz. Steichen really needs to start focusing on it because we 100% have the personnel to make it work.

  3. Page has mentioned this a few times too. It’s really odd and pretty archaic especially for modern offense. It’s almost like the offense is designed to just have Hurts figure it out when blitzes get through

  4. Hurts needs to pick it up presnap better, we can have the hots but it has to be identified presnap. He’s not going to have the time to survey after it’s hiked unless he does his scramble thing which has worked great most of the time but not ideal.

  5. If it’s a scheme thing I’d love to know the tradeoff. Like what do we gain by not having hot routes?

In this example there definitely is and IMO it’s probably Jalen feeling the pressure and worrying about a batted ball or something so just bailing, but there’s been a lot of plays JT and others have shown where it seems like there’s no quick read at all to dump off to.

I get that ok you can probably pick up a chunk play if Jalen is able to break contain and make something happen, but tbh in the film I’ve watched it doesn’t even seem like our guys are very good at consistently getting open once he does break contain.

I watch a lot of football and the sequence he just showed, pressure-roll right-nowhere to go-PBU on contested ball, happens to our offense way more than I’ve seen in others.

  6. We have struggled with hot reads but this is a pretty bad example. They only brought 5, we had 5 linemen. They didn’t make the proper slide/bump, Jalen didn’t think Hot after snap because it should have been picked up.

  7. Have we really needed to yet? I could see this as something they could switch to if needed?

  8. Are we really this concerned about blitz protection in a game where we had like 4 different line combos take snaps? and still only gave up 1 sack? line play improves with continuity and that went out the window in the cards game.

  9. Hurts had a free man rushing to his face as soon as he said hike. If he tried throwing that ball he woulda got creamed.
