[Carney] More and more I look at this, I don’t mind Pickett wanting to give Diontae Johnson a shot here. He sees Noah Igbinoghene’s back in trail technique here, just like on throw to Freiermuth. Needs to have better ball placement though, put it where only DJ can go and get it. #Steelers

  1. Figured I’d post this since there was a lot of finger pointing, specifically DJ for not making an attempt at this ball, but pretty clear he had no chance and wanted the ball to the back of the endzone. Just a young QB and his WR not on the same page.

  2. It’s a miscommunication on the route, Diontae stops as if he’s going to hitch back to Kenny, then as Kenny throws he sees the safety bit underneath and starts running to the back of the endzone, but the ball is already out. If DJ comes back along the sideline he gets that catch and steps out at the 3, if Kenny holds it another 1.5 second DJ is open for the TD

  3. Man…watching this over and over just makes me more sad. If Kenny throws that basically anywhere else in the end zone then DJ is wide open for the game winning TD….but he threw right to the defender. Damn.

  4. Kenny could have just lobbed it to the middle of the end zone and DJ probably gets there. Whole thing is open.

  5. If you looked at this and didn’t have problems with KPs decision making, your own decision making needs to be examined. It was a bad read, a bad decision, and a terrible pass.

These things happen with young qbs. However let’s not pretend what he did here was defensible.

  6. Oh man, the middle of the field is WAY OPEN. Adjust the route (I think it’s pat) and it’s gonna make that safety have to make a choice. It’s gonna be between him and DJ. Tried to back shoulder it because that safety came up under. Run with the QB Pat!!

Either way, I was satisfied with the gamble. You’re gonna win some and hopefully learn from the losses. This is one of those learning curves, and I like gambling, so…

  7. It was just terrible. Once the LB starts running with Najee Pickett could have easily gained 10-15 yards on a scramble. Or to preserve clock just throw it away. There were like four options there and he picked the worst one.

  8. Wow from this angle that reminds me a lot of a certain throw that won us a super bowl.

If this ball had been placed like that toward the back of the end zone maybe he gets it?

  9. There was no need to throw it. If you’re questioning the ability to make a good throw (which he had to of or he would’ve thrown it literally anywhere else) run for the first and then spike if you can’t get out of bounds.

  10. With 20 seconds left you’re going to eventually throw a contested pass into the endzone. I was more annoyed at the dinking and dunking and useless 2-yard run.
