Russell Westbrook: “I’ll sacrifice whatever it is that needs to be sacrificed — parts of my game that I’ve done for years to accommodate whatever it is that the coach needs me to do, and I’ll continue to do that.”

  1. Also more from Russ:

Westbrook said there were some adjustments he had to make to his routine to stay ready. He normally sprints from one side of the court to the other just before tipoff, for instance, to get his heart rate up. On Friday, he rode an exercise bike in the tunnel before coming in the game midway through the first quarter.

But his response Friday was different from the one he gave after the preseason finale, when he came off the bench and lasted only five minutes before exiting with hamstring soreness, later questioning if Ham’s decision to bring him in as a reserve could have caused the injury.

This time around, there was acceptance from Westbrook.

“I’m actually not mad with how we played tonight,” he said. “Our energy was in the right direction, which I’m happy about. And I think it’s important obviously to get AD back and get guys healthy, getting us — get things going. But until then, nobody’s going to feel sorry for us. We got to find a way to compete and get a win.”

  2. People need to get over thinking Russ coming off the bench is gonna fix the team or his game. That’s literally not the issue, his offensive game is easily defended against currently and that does not change whether he takes 5 shots or 15, or he starts or comes off the bench

Good for him for trying to make it work, but there is no making it work for him and the roster.

  3. I mean last night he did look like he was trying, and it was working to some degree that game was close till the end

Ultimately no matter what he does, the weak bench, inconsistent play from AD, along with his injuries…this team will continue to pile up loses. bad situation to be in cause even if he starts playing atleast average, lakers season is still doomed.

It’s a lose-lose no matter what. Sad to see a MVP and a guy who gave it his all on the court night in night out go out like this. Was never the biggest Stan of his but I enjoyed Russ throughout his prime years. Now he might legitimately be out of a job next season at only 33 years old with no significant injuries that put him in this spot. What a ending to a hall of fame career

It sucks as someone who respected him.

  4. I mean he looked better yesterday, but 18 points on 17 shots is just not gonna cut it. The problem is Russ needs spacing, and to have spacing, they need shooting. Unless they start shooting better, these will be last year’s Lakers: if LeBron isn’t scoring 50+, they’ll lose.

  5. Media is going to drive this guy either mad or depressed. On and on and on about this. Enough. It’s relentless. 24/7 cycle. Christ.

  6. He had moments last night. They still need to find a trade for him though. It doesn’t fit anyone

  7. Usually a person sacrifices something for a greater good/objective.

He’s sacrificing parts of his game so the Lakers go 29-53 instead of 20-62

  8. Will you stop trying to get into a fight with every fan that says you suck? Cuz that seems like the most necessary first step.

  9. Watched the game vs Timberwolves. Objectively, there are so many other reasons why this team sucks and Russell to me isn’t even at the top of the list. He seems like an abrasive personality but sad to see the guy constantly get crucified by the media

  10. he’s gonna set like 6.5 ball screens next game & then never do it again, just like that 1 game last year

  11. Russ was one of my least favorite NBA stars.

Then he came to my Lakers to join a collection of other NBA guys I mostly don’t like and it made me even more frustrated as a fan.

Now I just feel bad for the guy and want them to sell everyone else off so he can show people that he’s still a perfectly fine player in the right situation.

Oh, and I want to give him a hug.

  12. Why are people freaking out. They were in the game pretty much in every game except against the warriors. All winnable games imo.

  13. WESTLOAF: 🎶said I would do anything for wins / I would do a-anything for wins 🎶

HAM: Russell, we need screens and aggressive off-ball movement so we can use your athleticism without taking the ball away from a literal GOAT

WESTLOAF: 🎶I would do anything for wins, but I won’t do that🎶

  14. Russ has declined, but his bad play isn’t the only issue with the Lakers. They basically have no other 4 or 5s besides Bron or AD. Bron stops trying when he thinks he’ll lose, but all of AD’s injuries come from over hustling because he has to play 2 positions at once since his other defending teammates are usually undersized guards.

  15. The contract Russ, it’s the damn contract. It’s the 47 mil for a league minimum or slightly above player. Sacrifice that.

  16. What Westbrook thinks he can do, and he’ll actually do are totally different things.

He has no control over his lizard brain. The moment the adrenaline kicks in, hes the same player as before.

  17. He hasn’t sacrificed any part of his game though? It’s not like he’s boxing out or slapping the floor playing defense lol, like what are we talking about here?

  18. The media sucks.

Russell hasn’t been playing well (like real bad) but the Lakers suck, AD is always injured/has regressed, and Bron has aged.

The team is trash and we don’t need to keep hammering that point home.

  19. Then be locked in on defense at all time, come off the bench and set screens with 100% intensity.
