PFT (Not Florio): “Rich Bisaccia hasn’t improved the Packers’ special teams”

[Article](https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2022/11/03/rich-bisaccia-hasnt-improved-the-packers-special-teams/)

Essentially [**FootballOutsiders.com**](https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/nfl/special-teams/2022/regular) rate every special teams play then compares to a league-average play in the same situation. They show this squad as 31st in the NFL in special teams (Dolphins rank worse somehow). They rank the Packers below average in all five every elements of special teams: Field goals/extra points, kickoffs, punts, kickoff returns and punt returns.

So all those millions of dollars for one of the best Special Teams coordinators and our special teams is still hot fucking garbage. I think our special teams is as cursed as Chicago’s Quarterback position.

  1. Whole part of it is always coaching in these situations, ST is more of a reflection of depth of the roster. Which we have none.

  2. We can blame the coordinators but the bottom of the roster isn’t great. We had to use starters on special teams last season and it still sucked lol. This team just needs a complete overhaul

  3. Football Outsiders actually doesn’t consider blocked kicks apparently because they’re so “rare”. They probably overrate us because of that lmao. L

  4. > Dolphins rank worse somehow

I mean, they did have the Butt Punt. I feel like if that’s what it takes to be worse than us, that’s fair.

  5. You know, I don’t really care what the grades say. There have definitely been painful ST moments this year and costly errors (**cough AMARI**) – but halfway through this season I can say honestly that I have noticed ST improvement on the whole. Certainly the additions of Rudy Ford, Kesean Nixon and Leavitt have made a positive impact

  6. 31st is technically an improvement. Last year we were 32 and the gap between 32 and 31 was almost as big as the gap from 1 to 31. But yeah this unit is ass. Crosby should’ve been cut and we can’t block at all for punts

  7. Is it possible that gb special teams was so bad that it might take a little time to fix? Not trying to make excuses for anyone but shouldn’t we give rich the same kind of leeway we’d give a new OC or DC who just took over a unit they weren’t involved in building for the most part and is instilling a new system?

Don’t get me wrong, they’re real bad, and they need to step it up (along with offense, defense, coaching, FO, gift shop employees… basically everyone except brat stand guys). Jussayin’.

  8. The eyeball test shows some improvement. I’m not scared that they will fuck up the game on every play this year. Now its just like 1/3 special teams plays.

  9. I straight up don’t believe the implication of this “stat.” The eye test is pretty clear that our ST are not the game breaking calamity they were last year.

  10. BG probably has more to do with the ST being trash since the coaching change didn’t help as much as everyone thought it would.

  11. honestly at this point its more of a roster thing than coaching. No way 4 straight ST coordinators can be that bad

  12. I’d say after the defense not being as good as we wanted this is pretty close for 2nd of annoying things this season. We were absolute trash last year and clearly cost us the 49er win, and we are…. The same if not worse after hiring the special team guru

  13. Y’all wanted to blame the young black coach soooooo bad last year and we having the same issues. Rich has brought more energy to the teams tho, puttin Nixon at the return spot is a good look tho.

  14. Crosby needs to get the ball through the end zone on kickoffs. He is last In the league in that according to PFF. The coverage on kickoffs is a little better than last year, but still bad. A big part of the problem would be solved if there was a touchback on every kickoff, like 90% of teams are able to do.

  15. Rich is not the problem. We didn’t give him a kick or punt returner. We didn’t give him a core blocking unit when we are marching Newman and Hanson onto the field. We don’t have a LS.

    Coverage has been better.

  16. I’m willing to give Rich the benefit of the doubt. He inherited a garbage can of a special teams and while they’ve been below average im overall not too upset with the play. Because our roster lacks depth in favor of talent special teams is always going to be rough. It’s not even top 5 in issues with our team imo

  17. Gute’s fault. He’s trash. Bottom 5 GM in the league. Fuck Gute. All my homes hate Gute.

  18. This years special teams is noticeably better than last years. GB just doesn’t have any good returners but there’s definitely been an improvement. I wouldn’t expect them to suddenly be a top 10 after being historically one of the worst ever the last two years

  19. The punt team is a lot better. They’re passing the eye test. O’Donnell was a good signing and they have good tacklers that can get down field. Bisaccia isn’t going to make our special teams dramatically better in one season.

  20. Everyone needs to remember. And I quote long time packers writer Vic. “Players not plays” if you don’t have the players to execute the scheme than it doesn’t matter. Look at Dan Quinn with the Seahawks. Best defense for several years. Legion of boom. Went to Atlanta and their D was trash. Same in Dallas. Did he forget how to coach?? No. He didn’t have the personnel that Seattle had.
