  2. In particular:

    ““Everybody wants the coach’s head,” Kekalainen said. “It’s not that simple.

    “We all need to look in the mirror, starting with me and looking at everything we have on the ice. I’m the guy who is responsible for what’s on the ice and the support staff who leads them on the ice. That’s where it has to start, and I’m going to analyze everything we’re doing with my staff.

    “The players are the guys who are executing the systems on the ice. They have to be responsible, too. I can guarantee you we’ve been doing a lot of thinking on why we’ve played this badly on most nights.” “

  3. Glad the Jackets aren’t sticking their heads in the sand about the flaws of the team. (Unlike my Yankees UGHHH lolz.) I think everyone’s reading too much into the start though. We’re a very young team, everyone learning the league and each other. Of course there’s gonna be a rocky period. You just have to hope it isn’t long. IMO the only real concerns personnel wise are Gubrandson and general defense efficacy. You get them playing even to baseline NHL standards and the forwards will have the space and time to figure out goalscoring from there.

  4. Glad to see Jarmo take responsibility since he did build the team however….I do not believe the team he put together would be THIS bad under competent coaching. We are young, inexperienced, and are not close to gelling. Some issues can absolutely be solved tomorrow with a better coach. Not talking playoff team, I’m talking maybe not needing 7+ goals to win. A good coach would not have this defense dumpster fire right now. We need noticeable improvement. Jarmo is not stupid, so I’m reading between the lines…he knows our very slim playoff hopes are over already, there is not a coach he wants out there, so he’s going to play it out and get the draft pick. I think we will all be happy and call it the right move if we get a top 3 pick and call it an utter disaster if we do not.

  5. It’s (very) early, but if Chinakov, Kent Johnson, Sillinger, and Marchenko don’t pan out he’s going to be in a lot of trouble

  6. We are soooooo young across the board it’s not exactly a recipe for success. I hope jarmo sticks around I don’t think a lot of this is his fault but we’re rushing our prospects, have some bad contracts on vets and it shows as we are forcing our prospects into prominent roles before they’re ready. Kent silly chinner peeke boqvist bean look great in spurts but they are kids who should be in Cleveland or playing for juniors developing. Bean and boqvist maybe not the same but it’s insane to me that we brought up jiricek at all. But then we have 23 year old Marchenko and he is playing in Cleveland. Like it makes no sense

  7. There was a guy on the Monday mailbag with McElligott this week who was demanding he hear more from Jarmo and JD about the state of affairs.

    Well here you go lol. Although BMac brought up a bunch of team centric responses the FO has given lately and absolutely roasted the dude for saying there’s no accountability within the org.

  8. CBJ could’ve just… not started rebuilding when they did. Just saying. I liked the Jackets squad the way it was a few years back. Honestly, we all did.

  9. I really disagree with him blaming himself for the on-ice product this season because that is results-driven analysis. You have to judge his decision-making based on the information available to him at the time, and I think he generally made the smart calls.

    Decisions that made sense at the time:

    * Extending Elvis
    * Trading Jones, Fligs, and Savard
    * Drafting KJ and Silly
    * Trading Cam for Voracek
    * Drafting Jiricek and Mateychuk
    * Signing Laine long term
    * Signing Gaudreau

    Decisions that were questionable at the time:

    * Trading Bjork (although I understand the necessity)
    * Signing Gudbranson for that term and value
    * Not addressing the defense in any other way
    * Promoting Larsen

    Unfortunately a lot of the good decisions are not panning out because the results we see individually have been entirely unexpected. Elvis looks *bad*, even from my perspective as a defender of goalie play behind this defense; the young guns don’t look promising with the exception of KJ right now; Voracek is out indefinitely; Laine and Gaudreau look okay at best compared to what they are capable of; and the rookie defenseman understandably need more time.

    With such an abysmal defense last year that should have been our prime focus but that was ignored largely and that was surprising to me. It’s been so glaring how bad we are there and it seems like no one even cares if they defend or not. It’s passionless.

    And the Larsen call. For years we were told, “Larsen does more than just the powerplay,” “He beings value,” blah blah fucking blah. Well now the luster has worn off and we are worse in every single aspect of hockey now that he’s had a full year with the team to make them his, with the powerplay being historically abysmal not just for this franchise but the entire NHL.

    Now we should take note that numerous teams have had major losing streaks including the Pens, Flames, Sens, and Blues. We could just be a victim of whatever phenomenon is going on and we could rattle off and 8-2-0 over the next ten and get back to form. Who knows? I think it’s too soon to call for his head but it’s also not time to turn down the flames under his seat.

    All that said, I think Jarmo has done a good job so far building the team and we just need it to perform as expected.
