Edit: I watched them both yesterday. I think the main concern is naturally the defensive side of his game(without the puck). He cannot use strenght to defend so he needs to play a smart game and use his stick a lot. I’d say he is not bad. I don’t think he will ever become the guy you play to protect a lead but I think he can become an efficient dman who does not cost a lot to his team. He makes good decisions and his positining is good. There is just so much you can do with his size though. But what I like is that he developped his game around his size (like caufield), meaning he won’t put himself in dangerous situation where his size could become a risk (either by being easily neutralized or even for injuries). I think it’s important. You should probably always pair him with a bigger guy who is pretty reliable defensively (Savard, Guhle for example). When he does get possession of the puck in the defensive zone, his skating abilities makes him a very efficient dman to carry the puck and help the transition. He is elite in that part of the game.

His offense is something else entirely. he is two dominant qualities: Hockey sense and skating. He reads plays very well and os already pretty good at evaluating when he can take risks and when it’s better to play it safe. He rarely will put his team in a difficult situation. One of the reason for that is that he is a possession monster and can basically keep the puck as long as he wants. Most players have two moves. You can deke on the right and move to the left ( and vice versa) to trick your opponent. Hutson has more options than that. He can deke on the left, right , left without any difficulty so it makes it very very hard to predict what he is going for. it will be not as efficient in the NHL but almost. PP and 3 on 3 will be where he is most confortable. On the point, his shot is not amazing buthe is pretty good at finding lanes and get the puck to the net. He won’t score often from that position though. In dangerous are though, he can create space and use his deceptive skating and use it to his advantage. His shot is not a weakness but it’s average.

He is a lot of fun to watch like you can see in the videos I linked. I don’t think he is a game breaked like makar can be but he is someone who can transform your PP in a pretty spectacular way and help enormously with the transition game without being a liability defensively.

I think as it is, he can become a very good second pair dman. That is what I would project.

If he gains size, strenght and improve his shot, the sky is the limit.

  2. He grew half an inch higher and weighs more than 10 pounds more than during the start of the NCAA season btw if you didn’t know. It was revealed yesterday
