[Yahoo Sports] Pros and Cons: Should Yankees sign Trea Turner?

  1. Trea at SS. Volpe at 2B when he is ready. Move Peraza at 3B. DJ at 2B and then him and IKF become super flexes. Use gleyber to dump donaldsons contract

  2. Obviously … who wouldn’t want Turner?

But if you want further proof of Cashman being bad at his job, the obvious argument against going for him is that we had Donaldson and IKF clogging up spots over the past year+, so we never fully got to see if Cabrera, Volpe, or and Paraza are gonna be the future of the infield.

If we had simply given them all a chance to play, we’d know if we actually needed to buy an elite SS, or if we already had one and could instead spend elsewhere.

Instead, Cashman will skip out on buying another elite SS on the assumption we have one… but that leaves us in a precarious spot if one of our farm guys don’t work out because there are really no great options coming up in the FA market over the next few years.

  3. If y’all like guys who perform in the regular season and then disappear in October, then yes

  4. My biggest question is there something that LA knows that we don’t know? LA has the money but why aren’t they not extending his contract. Something is fishy going on.

  5. I wouldn’t advise it. He’s a damn good player and provides skills that aren’t emphasized much in today’s game but with Volpe and Peraza nearing the show I’m not sure spending on a short stop makes a ton of sense. I’d rather use that money to bolster the bullpen and rotation

  6. Sign Judge, Turner, and DeGrom

    Profit immediately.

Who cares about 2030, probably New York is under 20 feet of water by then

  7. Going to be interesting how choosy we prove about the FAs. There were genuine red flags for everyone last season – Seager’s defense, Semien’s inability to sustain his performance, Correa’s durability, Story’s arm and ability to play outside Coors, Baez not being worth the money. I never felt bad about passing on any of them.

This year’s class feels a lot more well-rounded. Would we, say, accept Turner’s middling defense to get his absurd contact and speed? Or Swanson’s decent bat for his GG defense? (Maybe not Swanson, his profile is only a bit better than the “105-110 wRC+ with excellent defense” reasonable projection for Peraza – which would still make him a great SS if not elite.)

I’m coming around to signing Turner. A top of the lineup of Benny-Turner-Judge-Rizzo would be the best we’ve had in years, providing 4 very different offensive profiles that all work together. Benny gets on base, Turner causes chaos on the bases ahead of Judge and Rizzo bringing the power from both sides of the plate. With Bader turning the lineup over as another threat to steal, that’s one helluva lineup.

  8. Yes please. I live in D.C., and follow the Nats pretty closely. I watched Turner come up, he is everything you want in a baseball player. Plus he already has a Yankee hair cut. Sign him please!!

  9. Pro: Turner is always the first player I acquire in The Show for my Yankees franchise, and I’ve won a few World Series, so, duh.

    Con:

  10. Absolutely should. If volpe and peraza turn out to both be solid mlb players, one can slide over to third. Go get this man.

  11. Idk I think instead we should wait like 5-7 years before signing him so we can still pay him a lot, but like a little less maybe, and also he isn’t actually good any more but is a “veteran presence”

  12. The answer is obviously yes.

To not go after Trea because of Volpe & Peraza is stupidity. They’re both completely unproven minor leaguers. The odds of them turning out is like what? It’s not 100% for sure – and people talk like these guys are the second coming of Jeter. Maybe they do turn out? What’s the best case? – they’re as good as Trae? So get the one that’s that NOW.

  13. >**CONS**
    >
    >The Yankee hype machine is turned up to 11 on shortstop prospects Oswald Peraza and Anthony Volpe. Probably with good reason, though in reality the two are just good prospects until they prove they can thrive in the major leagues.
    >
    >The Yankees did not bite last winter when Correa, Corey Seager and Marcus Semien were among the options at short and obtained Isiah Kiner-Falefa as a stopgap instead. They just agreed on a $6 million contract with IKF for 2023, though we don’t yet know whether that’s to be the starter at short, a utility player, or a fail-safe if the kids flounder.
    >
    >But signing Turner, 29, obviously would block both Peraza, who was impressive in his brief MLB debut last year and probably should’ve gotten more playing time over IKF, and Volpe.
    >
    >Maybe the Yanks should sit out the Turner market just to force themselves to actually give Peraza and Volpe a real shot at the job, whether it’s in April or a few months into the season. Other teams have leaned on young players and it’s worked. Just ask the Atlanta Braves.
    >
    >And while Turner is a superlative player, he did have a so-so defensive year in 2022, making a career-worst 16 errors. He was tied for 20th among shortstops in defensive runs saved and the Yankees have emphasized defense recently, upgrading their glovework significantly last season. There’s not much to nitpick in Turner’s game, though.
    >
    >**PROS**
    >
    >If you recall, the Yankees had some trouble getting hits in the playoffs. Over the past three seasons, Turner was first, first and second in the National League in hits. Batting average isn’t the sexiest stat around, but Turner has a .302 lifetime mark and the Yankees are seeking players who can put the ball in play and make things happen, which would complement their slugging prowess.
    >
    >And Turner can generate offense with his legs, too. He was the fifth-fastest player in baseball this year via average sprint speed and he’s an expert base stealer. He led the NL with 32 swipes in 2021 and stole 27 bases in 30 tries in 2022, good for fourth. Maybe next year’s bigger bases increase Turner’s totals and boost his value further.
    >
    >Just because he’s speedy does not mean Turner is simply a slap-and-run type. He hit 28 homers in 2021 and 21 last year while also driving in 100 runs for the first time in his career. In addition, he had a career-best 39 doubles last season.
    >
    >There’s been reporting that Turner prefers to play on the East Coast – he was born in Florida, went to college at North Carolina State and came up with the Washington Nationals. The Yankees could use some star power if Judge departs and maybe Turner’s game of hits, slugging and speed holds some Bronx appeal. It should be appealing even if Judge stays.

  14. UH…YEAH…last I checked…he is certainly WAY fucking better than IKF. Frankly I have NO idea why we did not try this before signing IKF. But again….I have railed on Hal and how the Judge contract will affect our ability to sign guys like THIS. We have ALREADY settled on IKF. That should say something.

  15. Judge back, Trea at 2B, Peraza at short, Cabrera as super UTIL, DJLM at 3B, and Benni or Nimmo in left. Who says no, and why is it the Yankees FO? I’m extremely confident that lineup could beat Houston and win it all, even before you add in potential pitching additions.
