  1. The way he handled Murray during the beer throwing was awesome too. Maybe inconsequential since Murray had more equipment than anyone and probably needed the least protection, but just illustrates the type of leader he is.

  2. Been an absolute warrior for us out there. Not as fast as he once was but his gap control is still elite, he’s mean, and he reads the play well.

  3. I was super excited to see we signed him for the 2 seasons in the off season. He has been invaluable for this group. Leading by example and showing what it takes to be a pro in this league. Gio we love you buddy.

  4. I love that we have him in our depth to step up in situations like this.

That being said I do not want to play him for 20+ mins a night 4-6 weeks straight. Hoping Sandin and Lilly can step up as well and let their younger legs get the extra minutes instead.

Don’t want Brodie and Rielly coming back just for Gio to be gassed.

  5. I love Gio. Auston was right, this guy is just unintentionally funny. His answers during those practice walk-ins are my favourite. Plus he’s grounded, a great leader and competitor.

  6. He is literally the only reason our defense hasn’t completely lost their way after these injuries. Perfect balance of skill/ability as well as being a longtime captain and leader, literally the best signing that we’ve made (thank you Dubas).

We should all be incredibly thankful that he took such a discount to play here, who knows the different moves that would’ve had to been made if him/his deal wasn’t around

  7. What a solid pick up.

It really makes you reflect on the aging players we picked up for veteran leadership in previous years; spezza, Simmons, Marleau, Thornton etc.

None of those guys really panned out other than Spezza, and even he struggled. Looking back maybe the problem was trying to stick aging forwards with a fast moving offense. Were as on D a veteran can slow down the play, use his angles, and pass the puck up quickly to be effective rather than rely on foot speed alone

  8. Meanwhile…sixth and seventh defencemen 10 years younger are holding out for twice the money. He’s a low-maintenance employee who brings it every night. Love the guy.

  9. Flames fan coming in (saw this on r/popular) to give Gio some love. Miss that guy! He is rock solid, and a great dude to boot.

  10. Flames fan popping in, glad you guys love him as much as we did. We miss him dearly. Oh captain my captain.

  11. Honestly can’t believe how good he still is at 39! Terrific defensively, basically never makes a defensive mistake, and still a quality puck mover and decent offensively. He’s taking a MAJOR hometown discount.

  12. Gio is the man! He eats pucks and shuts it down. Former Norris winner as well. We are lucky to have him

  13. I would like to hop onto this Gio appreciation bandwagon.

Took a nice hometown discount for us and has been rock steady.
