He was 50 years ahead of his time
I got way too much of a kick out of the sports editor for the Cleveland Plains-Dealer being named “Mr. Cobbledick”.
Man was moneyballing 50 years early
Dude, talk about an heirloom! If I was you I would get this preserved in some acid free backing paper and frame it, keeping it in a low light area where you can enjoy it.
The first ever long time listener first time caller.
This is awesome. Thanks for sharing. I would be super proud of Gramps if I were you.
Can someone smarter than me give a tldr on this guy’s system?
Can we run this on modern players and compare to wrc+? I think it would be interesting
“Advanced stats” aren’t new. Branch Rickey, yes that Branch Rickey, came up with a SABRmetric-like formula. This is another early example. Very cool.
I thought that it might be tongue and cheek at first.
He gets on base
That was a fun read. Thanks for sharing
thought it was gobbledick
Dude was just casually thinking about a proto-wOBA
Cobbledick? Seriously? How did people take each other seriously with those kind of names
This is like, really, really, really cool. Man was ahead of his time.
This is fantastic….he was ahead of his time! Did you happen to know your grandfather well? I was lucky enough to have my baseball-loving grandfather in my life until I was 40 (2018). As a white kid from Vermont in the 40’s (which was probably 99.9% white then), his hero growing up was Jackie Robinson.
I almost didn’t make it past cobbledick; glad I did.
Super cool, and another stat to pull out when it supports my conclusion… “Sure, your player has a higher bWAR, but what about Roy’s BE Rating?!”
