[Hayes]Twins would consider trading batting champion Luis Arraez for top-tier pitching: Sources

  1. !?!?!?!??!!??!

    To me this sounds like

    a) Rodon and other FA pitchers we’ve spoken to are asking A LOT more than we expected

    b) They think Arraez’ knees and defensive abilities are potentially serious red flags for the future

I would do this. But not for a rental. If we’re already balking at prices then we need someone with proper team control

I also think people need to realise what would be given up for an ace. We arent JUST talking Arraez. We’re talking Arraez + Royce Lewis + SWR and likely more

I would ALSO say that if this is being published i would think they are actively looking to move him. This is just the “well get your offers in” stage

  2. If you read the article they’re not actually linked to anybody specific in talks so I doubt it’s a serious conversation beyond “would we do it? Sure”

That said, Arraez is the type of player who will probably age poorly given his balky joints and bad defense, and we have a glut of infield prospects coming.

For the **right return**, namely somebody who would walk in and be the clear #1 starter on a staff full of 2s and 3s, I wouldn’t be entirely opposed.

  3. Unless it’s Cy fucking Young reincarnated I don’t want to hear those words out of your mouth again.

  4. I hate it, but it would make sense. Got a real logjam at 1st base with two lefties in Kirilloff and Luis. This would certainly be dependent on how confident they are that Kirilloff’s wrist issues are solved.

  5. Key takeaways:

    * “The Twins would prefer to not trade Arraez”, multiple times made clear they love him, but rising costs of high end FA SPs has Twins rethinking who may/may not be available in trade
    * Mentioned *speculating* how Arraez’s knees will hold up, along with where his defensive home is
    * Rotation is pretty well set for this year, but looking ahead to future seasons with Sonny/Kenta/Mahle all set to be FAs after this season

Overall this feels semi-clickbaitey, mostly just saying he’s not untouchable rather than actively on the block. Which shouldn’t surprise us. Not a single trade target was mentioned either FWIW

  6. Potential destinations:

Milwaukee – needs 2B and has very good starting pitching.

Arizona – Would love to acquire Zac Gallen

Florida? – Their middle infield is covered but perhaps Arraez plays 1B for them. Also has a lot of good, young starting pitching.

    Who else?

  7. They need to do something. Arraez is a great hitter but you cant win without pitching and they refuse to pay for it. You cant keep bringing in a bunch of #3 guys and expect them to be a #1.

With no salary cap and one of the richest families in the sport, i never understood why they dont go for it more.

For instance hanging onto these prospects that never see the light of day. So few of them pan out. If you are gonna go for it then go for it. Hanging onto guys like Royce Lewis instead of moving them for studs when you are right in the things just makes no sense to me.

They did this shit back in the day too. Trading guys like Luis Castillo. Cant win now if you are always trading for the future.

Go get an Ace its been a LONG TIME since we had one.

  8. What would this actually get us? I’d be so, so sad to see Luis go but his value is at max. If it could get us a potential ace I’d say yes, but that’s about it and I have no idea if that’s realistic or not.

  9. I like Arraez, but given the market of “top tier pitching”, that’s the price. You’re not getting an ace in a package with the best asset being Max Kepler.

My biggest concern in the trade market is that the Twins farm system right now seems to be awfully thin. There’s not much real prospect capital to trade with.

  10. Would really, truly hurt my heart but it’s also not 1980s baseball anymore. Arraez doesn’t play great defense anywhere, and doesn’t make sense as DH unless you’ve got TONS of power elsewhere in your lineup (earlier “not the 80s” note).

Also as someone else pointed out he might not age super well given his joints and history there?

I mean, it’s a pure hypothetical, but if it was for a great return we’d have to consider it

  11. Love Arraez but for the right return it’s worth it

Has to be someone pretty good to elite though

  12. Nothing should be shocking about this. Everyone on the team should be tradable assuming the return makes sense and improves the team.

  13. He hit .316 with 8 HR, 4 SB, 49 RBI

If we can get a solid #3 starter or a couple of prospects, he should be gone for those players.

  14. I’d accept for a true ace. But I’d be feeling like that crying but also dancing tiktok meme.

  15. It would break my heart but under the right circumstances it painfully would sense. I don’t like that it makes sense but it would make sense.

  16. Logically, I don’t hate it assuming they sign a Correa or another one of the top tier free agent SS. Also obviously depends on the pitcher.

My heart says no cause I love Luis.

  17. Well of course they would but no one else would. Pitching is a premium position but if we want a difference maker in the rotation Arraez wouldn’t be nearly enough.

  18. I don’t think there’s all that much news here. The FO’s line for as long as I can remember is that nobody is untouchable, and of course that includes Arraez.

I do think this team gets worse if he’s sent off for less than like a Gallen-type pitcher. I don’t even think I’d be happy with like Pablo Lopez in return.
