Zion Williamson during the Pelicans’ 5-game win streak: 28.0/9.8/6.0/1.8/1.6 on 65% FG%

With Ingram out and C.J. struggling, Zion’s been seeing more time as “point Zion” lately, and the results speak for themselves. What’s been particularly encouraging though has been his defense. His effort and aggression on that end of the floor are much improved from the start of the season, and as a result he’s gone from being a defensive liability to an asset.

Taking both offense and defense into account, this has probably been the best stretch of Zion’s career, and it’s been exciting to watch him take the next steps in his development as a player.

  1. Yeah he’s a high end all nba level player right now. The forward position is absurdly stacked right now. Anthony Davis Durant Giannis Tatum

  2. Dude is 22 years old putting grown ass men through hell. The ceiling on this guy is higher than any other player in the league.

  3. McCollum actually pisses me off. He’s averaging 2 more FGA than Zion despite shooting 20% worse.

  4. Easily been one of the best offensive forces in the NBA past 15 games or so.

Let’s put this in perspective. Pelicans are the 1 seed at 16-8. BI has missed 9 games. CJ has missed 4 games and is averaging single digit points since his return like 2 games ago & shooting 39/32/81 for the season.

For being considered a bad defensive player, or barely average, Zion is at the helm of the 3rd ranked defense for the season, only behind Cleveland and Milwaukee. Now a lot of that is due to the trio of Alvarado, Herb & Trey Murphy, but Zion has been a big contributer as well lately. Zion is also ranked 14th in DRTG for the season individually, highest on his team.

Also he’s commanding the 6th best offense in the league.

If he can start doing 29/9/6/1/1 for the season on the West 1 seed while leading a top 5 offense and defense, I think you not only talk All NBA 2nd team, but also some MVP buzz if other big name candidates falter.

  5. Perhaps the most impressive part has been Zion’s defense during this stretch. He has looked incredibly engaged and is starting to scratch into his potential on that end.

  6. I think Zion has shot under 50% twice this season so far and over 60% 9 times. He’s only started to look more comfortable over the past 8 or so games as well. Honestly wouldn’t be surprised if his TS% is pushing 70% by mid to late season.

  7. 6 assists is pretty fucking serious. He’s not Lebron level of forward who can facilitate but he’s making some insane passes.

  8. Zion is still a kid in the nba and is absolutely destroying grown men lol. This team is scary and imo will make the WCF . Too much talent

  9. He’s still shaking off rust too! This guy is and has been a treat to watch, really hope he can stay healthy.

  10. I love that he’s hitting the boards and blocking shots too. Crazy!

I’d love a Celtics Pelicans Finals.

  11. I think Zion has a higher ceiling than Luka. Zion can play alongside other ball dominate players, while still maintaining productivity. I don’t know if Luka can do the same. Zions ceiling on defense is significantly higher as well. In no way am I saying Zion is better than Luka.. because right now I don’t think he is. Ceiling tho? I think Zion has a higher ceiling.

  12. I still cant get over that recent highlight of him spinning baseline from the wing and slamming in a double clutch dunk at the rim.

He looked like a super quick athletic guard, like Wade/MJ/Kobe turning the corner but once he got to the paint he was big again like Barkley/Malone/Lebron, all power and force at the rim.

  13. What I like the most about him is how unique his style is. He’s the most explosive “bully ball” player ever.
