I got the sense that Ovi didn't want the goal to pass Howe to be an empty netter. I'm willing to bet he'll decline an empty netter when/if it's the record tying/breaking goal.

If it happens, it'll happen in the 2024-2025 season. He'll be pushing 40. Whether he gets it or not, in my mind, he is the greatest goal scorer ever.

CRAPS are so poverty that their ambitions boil down to one player scoring as many goals as possible. Rangers better. Faster, younger, more skilled, most intense… better.
So happy for Ovi and hope he does it as a Caps fan. But as a hockey fan in fairness to both Wayne and Gordie the WHA stats should be added as that was a pro league that merged with the NHL. Then no question who the scoring leader is. Until he beats those numbers which I hope he does as well the question of who the greatest scorer is will always be in doubt in a true hockey fans mind.
Gretzky would have had 1500 goals if that's all he focused on like Ovechkin. Ovechkins assists are a disgrace. Gretzky has almost 2000 assists. Ovechkin has 700 assists. Very selfish player. All of the truly great goal scorers made sure that they had far more assists than goals.
