  1. Tim Berni has been a really nice surprise. If he can clean up the penalties maybe he’s the answer to the defensive 2LD option. Should do as a defensive 3LD at the least.

It’s hard to tell if Gudbranson, Olivier, Roslovic, Nyquist, Kuraly, Gavrikov and Robinson are actually not good or if they’re all just playing higher in the lineup than they should be. Like Gudbranson is playing 1/2RD most nights when he’s a 3RD, Olivier is playing 3W when he’s a 4W, Roslovic is playing 1/2C when he’s probably a 3C, Nyquist was playing 1/2W and he should have been a 3W this year, Kuraly is playing 2/3C when he’s a 4C, Gavrikov is playing 1LD when he’s a 2LD and Robinson is playing 3W when he’s a 4W.

I really hope Werenski can start putting together full seasons with these kind of numbers. He really deserves to be mentioned in the top 10 defensemen in the league.

Laine’s game has come a long way from when he first joined the team. He used to have so little 5v5 impact either way and was just all about finishing. The finishing is still there and he has made a huge improvement in 5v5 offense and looks a lot more like other high caliber offensive players around the league in terms of defense now. Won’t stop the narrative that he’s one dimensional, but nothing you can do about stupid people.

  2. One thing that isn’t taken into consideration in a ton of these metrics as well as in the past. What role type is the player and where are their faceoff starts occurring most? Guddy isn’t great, but he’s not getting many, if any, offensive zone starts, similarly with players like Eric Robinson and Liam Foudy. Sure, there’s reasons they don’t get offensive zone starts, but there’s also a reason they’re used the way they are on the other side of that coin compared to players like Johnny.

  3. Who had Kent Johnson being the 2nd best defensive forward on our team? The kids brain is top shelf. His stick is so disruptive and he is maybe the only forward on the team that can successfully anticipate the run of play.

Werenskis numbers are staggering which is funny because his retrieval to zone exit microstats took a step back. He was a Top 3 defenseman at turning a retrieval into an exit with possession last year in terms of volume and success rate. This year he was still top in volume but was botching retrievals more so it’s possible that he improved as the season went on.

  4. Just from the little bit of Marchenko i’ve watched this year… you can just tell he is going to be a stud

  5. Actually I thought a lot of these would be worse. I know everyone is looking at Gudbranson but for 4mil and being 3rd in points Roslovic there is concerning.

Though Berni is looking to be a strong 3rd liner for the next few years and Bjork was really surprising considering Boqvist is supposed to be “the” offensive RHD. If both of these players can clean up silly penalties then they will help be excellent depth dmen
