  1. Yankees quaking in their shoes knowing they’ll have to face him for at least another 5 years

  2. “Cristian Javier’s deal is for 5 years and $64 million with a $2 million signing bonus and no team options.”

  3. How many years of club control did he have left? This sounds like Bregman’s deal from a couple of years ago, where they essentially shelled out the big money for an extra couple of years. Great news, either way.

  4. Have to love locking up Javier for 5 more years, especially for only $64 million.

Tucker, Bregman and Altuve all in line to get theirs next.

  5. If we use Julio Urias as an example of what Javier might make in his 3 years of arbitration (3.6 im year 1, 8 in year 2, 14.25 in year 3), this is like a 2yr/38.15m extension.

That’s pretty good for a quality pitcher in his age 29 and 30 seasons. He has his risks so it’s understandable.

  6. Looking through a lot of the comments, just to clarify, this isn’t a steal unless he’s pitching at an elite level in 2026 when he would’ve hit free agency. And by elite, I mean $30M a year AAV elite. We bought 2 years of free agency. His contracts this season, next, and possibly 2025 would have been below the AAV of this deal. Urias and Freid got $14.25M and $13.5M respectively in their final arb year. He was set to get either $3M or $3.5M this season, around $5-$7M next, and $10-$15M in his final arb year.

Luis Castillo was going into his final arbitration year this season before the Mariners signed him for 5 yrs/$108M. If he had gone to arbitration, Castillo’s 3 years of arbitration would’ve come out to around $18-$20M. If you give Javier those same numbers, then we got what would’ve been his first 2 years of free agency for 2 yrs/$40-$45M.

So no, it’s not a steal. It’s a good deal for Javier and if he continues to perform, it’s a good deal for the Astros. If he’s a top 5 pitcher going into year 4 of the deal, then it’s a little bit of a steal.

  7. What?! He was heading to arbitration when they could’nt come to an agreement. You mean to tell me that not reaching an agreement on a 1 year deal before going to arbitration doesn’t mean a damn thing and won’t turn a player against a team?! But… But… So many geniuses on the interwebs have assured me the Astros are only pissing players off, refusing to budge over relatively small amounts of money.
