  1. I know he’s far from the ace he once was but Hamels was always one of my favorite pitchers so I’m still stoked

  2. Chalk this up as a cool move that could result in Hamels getting a few spot starts as needed throughout the year.

  3. Well I’m hoping some of these young rotation candidates beat him out and keep him off the roster even as a spot starter. Call me petty but I’m still salty about him trashing the fanbase back in the day. But another AAAA depth guy is never a bad thing I suppose. With a plethora of options one of them should become a better option than the Arrieta experience should injuries strike again.

  4. I imagine he signs with a bad team after spring ends and he’s just showcasing his stuff with us. We’ve got too many quality options and I don’t see him making the MLB roster. Especially with what we’ve invested in other guys who should compete for the roster.

  5. Fans will be here to support you Cole, beyond the “3rd inning to the 6th”, granted you’re actually pitching 🫠 #yourtimetoshine

  6. Not a Cole Hamels fan after he talked shit about SD in the past, BUT there really is no bad minor league contract, so if he makes the team I will root for him.

  7. Did I miss something, when did he talk shit about our fan base? Only thing I saw was he mentioned how frustrating it is that the Padres would sell off their good players and didn’t want to win. Times have changed.

  8. Looks like another zero risk Hail Mary option in case things go completely sideways w the rotation and we have limited choices. Sounds like he had the shoulder fixed yet who knows.

  9. My former Rancho Bernardo High Bronco team and classmate, Team Cherrios cover athlete, and Phillies World Series MVP pitcher. Returns back home!

  10. I remembered the stuff he said 10 years ago, and thinking to myself that he can get bent. Then upon reading this news, I went back to re-read them before I commented on it.

The comments were in poor taste, no doubt. But also, if we’re looking ourselves in the mirror and where we were both as a franchise and a fanbase, he wasn’t wrong. It’s been real hard to be a Padres fan for most of our existence as a franchise. In large part due to some of the things he said, owners that would pinch pennies, would trade away their homegrown stars because they knew they weren’t gonna pay them, and in general showing a lack of concern for winning. I’ve always had the motto when going to a game “I paid for 9 so I’ll stay for 9”. That said, in some of our darker days I can’t really blame fans for coming late or leaving early.

Obviously, now that isn’t the case. 10 years have passed. We now have a winning organization from the owner’s box to the 26th guy on the roster. And the best fans in the game. Hamels is also 10 years older, hoping to get back into the league and hopefully is wiser then when he made those comments. If he cracks the opening day roster, which I think is unlikely but possible, inevitably he will be asked about those comments, and I’m sure a lot of us will base how we feel about him off of that response. For now, I’m willing to give the guy a second chance and hope that he can recapture the Hamels of old, for both his and our benefit. If we are able to get anything good out of him at all, I think that would be considered a win.

    LFGSD!!!

  11. 2023 Rotation:

    Darvish
    Musgrove
    Snell
    Martinez
    Lugo
    Wacha
    Teheran
    Hamels
    Morejon

    Does that about cover it?

  12. Julio Tehrán va. Cole Hamels vs. Adrian Morejon vs. Jay Groome for the #6 starters spot should make spring training more fun to watch.
