  1. Just posted the same thing but deleted it when I saw this one! Withholding judgement until terms are known but we definitely need pitchers for next season

  2. So far in his Cardinals career, Mikolas has thrown 631 innings with a 3.46 ERA, a 3.84 FIP, and a mere 4.8% walk rate. He’s been worth approximately 10 fWAR.

The projection system ZiPS thinks that over the next three years (this year plus two more for the extension), Mikolas will have the following stat lines:

    – 2023: 156 IP, 3.75 ERA, and 1.6 fWAR
    – 2024: 135 IP, 3.94 ERA, and 1.1 fWAR
    – 2025: 117 IP, 4.22 ERA, and 0.5 fWAR

The key will be his walk rate. If he’s still able to manage a walk rate below 2 batters per 9 innings, he’ll remain an excellent fit for the Cardinals’ defense

  3. Great deal for the Cardinals, happy to have him back. I believe this means the end for Gumby. Next year you have Matz ($10m) and Mikolas ($20m) locked up. I assume Libby/Hudson/Pallante will take 1-2 spots. Gumby will likely get 18-20M which pushes you to ~50m in starting pitching. Do they try to sign Gumby or go for a top of the rotation guy and fill out the rest with internal option?

  4. Good on Miles for getting $123.5M after coming back from Japan, that’s not too far off from the amount of money the team has committed to Goldschmidt ($130M) at this point.

  5. This is fine to at least guarantee some stability going forward. But I don’t understand why they have no reservations paying $20 million for Mikolas’s age 35-36 seasons after he basically missed 2 of the 4 years of his previous contract, but are unwilling to spend just a little bit more on pitchers with much higher ceilings. Like Mo and the local reporters made it pretty clear they were never actually in on Rodon, but he only got $27 million for his age 30-35 seasons. Last year, Kevin Gausman got $22 million for his age 31-35 seasons, but they seemed to ignore him and go straight for Matz. Considering all pitchers, including the ones they seem to covet, have serious injury risks, I would like to see them go for a real difference maker at some point

  6. Good value for mikolas. Makes me wonder if this means we’ll let flaherty walk after this year now. Next up for extension talks will be Montgomery, edman, and possibly BroNeil.

  7. 22 of his 33 regular season starts last year were quality starts. Exactly 2/3 of the time he gave us a quality start. He had 3 other starts last were good, just fell short of being deemed a quality start. Before his Aug. 9 start at Colorado where gave up 10 earned, his first 22 starts of the year gave him a 2.92 ERA. After he left Colorado, he pitched to a 2.80 the rest of the way. He was mostly better than his 3.29 ERA (still very good) gave him credit for. This deal is a win.
