We really don’t sign free agents, huh

  1. AAV at time of signing is usually (except for Deshaun Watson) a fantasy number. I’d be more interested in knowing amount paid over the eventual contract duration.

  2. We do, it’s just not how we get our stars. We prefer to invest in players that have done it here. If Im not mistaken, TJ is the highest paid D player. Minka is highest paid Safety. Cam gets paid. They pay stars, but they pay OUR stars as long as the star is reasonable. (lookin at you Bell, damn man)

They use FA to make sure they have a stable team no matter the BPA in the draft. They really try not to count on rookie starters so they fill spots with what they hope will be competwnt players, reducing urgency of forcing a pick and praying it works.

Considering they have 2 top 10 players overall, a top 10 DL, hopefully a top 15 Qb if not more, a top 10 wr and the best rookie wr, a top 10 TE, and a top 2 kicker, Im pretty ok with their approach to FA.

  3. To be fair, a lot of these signings are trash. Golladay, Gerald McCoy, Ricky Wagner, Allen Robinson, JC Jackson, Carl Lawson, William Jackson, Bud Dupree (still love you)—all busts. Then you have some expensive one year rentals at QB. Then injury-prone players like Watt and Armstead.

I guess my point is that while it’s exciting to throw a lot of money at Big Name Free Agents, true responsible team-building is through the draft and smart budget-friendly free agent signings. Also, just re-signing your good players instead of focusing on unknowns.
