[Petriello] I don’t have slightest idea what to make of Berríos anymore & neither do you. But it’s interesting tonight to see how he spotted slurve on bottom, edges. Nothing middle. Slurve got 6 whiffs, 0 hard-hit balls. FBs got 3 whiffs, 5 HH. Want to see him spam 70% slurve some game.

  1. This is the problem though. You need to establish the fastball to make the breaking pitches work to be a starter. Look at tonight, heavy focus on breaking pitches worked the first time through because it seemed like it caught the hitters off guard (and it is a good pitch). Second time through they just didn’t swing at it much. I just dont know what happened to his fastball. The spin rate is pretty much the same as always, velocity has been fine, but it just gets hammered.

  2. I’m sacrificing everything and everyone I possibly can at this point. I just want Berrios to be good like he was for us in 2021.

  3. Please develop another fastball type pitch, because the sinker and fastball are not it. If only Doc was still here to teach him a cutter grip.

  4. I’m not comfortable seeing the word ‘slurve’ this much, although it’s a step above ‘slutter’ (which I really have to wrestle with my autocorrect over)

  5. The hill I will die on is that his slurve breaks too much and too early making it hard to tunnel effectively.

  6. Guy just needs to trust his sinker with disgusting movement and say fuck it to his flat ass 4 seam fastball.

  7. He was really good tonight, left a couple of fastballs down the middle (TBF, even aces do that), and one got hammered by Rengifo.

Very impressive start overall though, way better location inside the zone this game, stuck to the edges. They hit some good pitches.

Tonight really made me believe that he can turn this around.

  8. boy o boy that contract looking rough right now – maybe give him some time off or something?

  9. He needs to be sent to the minors and stay there until he figures his shit out. If he never figures his shit out, so be it. It’ll be a sunk cost. This season is too important for us to be throwing away every fifth game. We can’t keep wasting Vladdy and Bo’s control years.

I know this sub loves to put their head in the sand and pretend that everything is fine with Berrios, but it’s not.

  10. It’s only 2 starts and he had a very limited spring training. That said, a couple more of these and it’s time for d/l stint. Put him out with inflammation of the ERA and coach him for a couple months.

  11. He needs to shelve the 4FB, and only use the Sinker and only toss it into RH and away from LH.

This way if he ever misses his spot it’s a ball instead of floating down the middle.

  12. it’s something wrong with his fastball, velo, and or movement. Confidence level is low for him to throw fastball at any count. I do think the team know it, but definitely cannot fix it since last season, even for his WBC team pitching coach cannot help, that’s a bit concerning.

  13. It’s probably time to have Danny start catching when Berrios is pitching. Not blaming Kirk but it feels that Danny is better equipped to handle guys like Kikuchi and Berrios

  14. It’s tough cause we are competing we can’t afford to run out the worst starter in baseball every fifth day but we’re also on the hook for another 5 years so giving up on him now would be very costly
