Michael Mayer’s NFL comp

Michael Mayer’s NFL comp

  1. Really don’t like the idea of drafting him in the 1st, as solid and dependable as he might be. I think a 1st-round TE at least needs to have the athleticism and ceiling to become one of the elite ones. Jeff Cavanaugh covered this exact topic on his last episode. Randy Mueller, who nailed his eval of Isaiah Likely in last year’s TE draft class, also has Mayer as his 4th TE in the class (behind Kincaid, Washington, Musgrave) and bristled at the idea of him being taken in the 1st.

  2. We draft well so I’m not that worried. But I *really* hope we don’t take him in the first.

  3. That’s a great tight end 5-10 years ago. Witten is an all time great, arguably the second best TE of all time. The game has evolved. Current tight ends need to be athletic game wreckers to be a focal point in the offense.

  4. What written are they talking about? Young Witten? The one who was 6’6 and 260 could block and was a great athlete and catch? Or the most recent one? These comps are just dumb. Witten was a way better prospect then Mayer is and they just aren’t even close to the same player lol. Don’t listen to this shit.

  5. Evening keeps saying that the TE position has changed and that’s why Jason Wittens don’t dominate the position anymore. I disagree.

I think the big change is every NFL defense how has a big Nickel safety (like Kearse) that can lock down long TEs AND stop the run. That player is essentially the 3rd LB of every NFL defense.

The players that succeed at TE now are the types of athletic weapons that can get away from said Big Nickel cover guys.

Mayer is NOT that type of player so I’d rather go with Kincaid in the first or the other options later.

  6. We need to draft someone who holds and jumps offsides regularly so they can fit our culture. I don’t see anything about this man’s penalties so that’s a no from me.

  7. Does it really matter who they draft? It’s not like they really have a shot to winning anything anytime soon.
