Looked like he lost sight of the puck and maybe thought Mcann had it. Either way, the whistle came after the hit so it wasn’t dirty but definitely interference since Mcann didn’t have the puck.
And Dater is an idiot, he should not be a sports writer in my opinion. Maybe try Good Housekeeping.

When the whistle was doesn’t matter. It’s based off of if the player has the puck or not. He hadn’t had the puck since he shot. Cale had enough time to look around and seeing nothing he went for the hit. Absolutely a bad look for him. I’m not 100% sure it’ll be a suspension but I wouldn’t be surprised either. Maybe a fine since it’s playoffs.
