We shouldn’t worry too much about Spencer Torkelson. He’s shown improvement in nearly all of these metrics and clearly has potential to improve. I think we will see a better version of him soon.

surely! for the sake of this team, I hope you’re right
I think everyone agrees that the expectations for him are sky high, but they must be tempered. I think we as a fanbase are looking for reasons as to why we are not competing the way we want to be, and he is an easy target to blame because of where we drafted him and how much everyone expected from him. He’s shown flashes of being a great player, and I truly believe it will just take some time for him to put it all together. We can’t use guys like Julio Rodriguez and Adley as the barometer for the kind of impact a young player should be making early in their career because they are anomalies. There are countless stories of all-stars being late-bloomers, and Tork doesn’t even have a season’s worth of games under his belt.
I completely get the frustration because all anyone wants to see is him delivering and the tigers winning, but I think we just need to show him some patience. He’s shown a willingness to put in the work and he seems like the perfect candidate for the kind of person you want leading a team.
I could be completely off with this, and he may never develop the way we want him to, but people saying we should turn our back on a guy that we drafted 3 years ago and has played less than 162 games is a bit ridiculous in my opinion.
Walk rate still sucks.
It seems like he needs to increase his launch angle. Both his walk rate and K rate are down this year so I think the focus with him and the coaches are to get his contact and launch angle where they need to be. He’s making a lot more contact this year at the expense of some walks but also means he’s fighting off some tough pitches instead of striking out.
I think we’ll get a period this year where he gets white hot and pitchers will adjust and he’ll have to adjust again.
