Everyone’s acting like we gave up a DPOY in DFS and an all-star PG in Dinwiddie. All love & respect for these Mavs Legends, but they’re not the monumental assets the media is making them out to be.
We gave up 1 FRP for an 8x all star and 3x all NBA player, in a market where Rudy MF Gobert demanded 5 FRPs.
He comes with some question marks obviously, but if he resigns, this is a great deal considering the market. I’m tired of these lazy takes.
The only thing that hurt to lose was a potential post-Luka FRP.
Dinwiddie and DFS needed to go, and Mavs couldn’t afford literally any other all-star out there. It was a good trade, it just wasn’t the trade that they should’ve expected to fix everything. I’m still in awe that we didn’t trade for another F or C
If Dinwiddie was still here we would all be lamenting how much he gets paid. He’s a good player but he’s definitely paid like it, which IMO makes him a neutral asset. Even if we added him back the team right now for free it’s not like he moves the needle much.
Whereas Kyrie is a star. I think if people can look past all the off-court stuff with him, they’d have to see that DFS (who is just a guy), Dinwiddie (a hood but not great player), and a late First is PEANUTS when you’re getting a top 25 player back. Those guys aren’t ever available.
As someone else said, Goebert went for 5 firsts. Kyrie >>>> Goebert.
Always been a fan of Finney-Smith but…his game is elevated by playing alongside Luka. He was exposed in Brooklyn. Dinwiddie is a great sixth man at this point and that’s about it.

Honestly, anything that comes out of his mouth should land on deaf ears.
That package for Kyrie was whatever. That package for Woods hurts me more.

Out of the majority of trades we’ve made in recent years, this is one I would actually say we didn’t OVER pay on. DFS was objectively bad the 2H half of the season and even Dinwiddie’s numbers dipped significantly. The FRP sucks to lose but it’s a half decade away from being conceded… there was no way we were getting a better player than Kyrie for the package we gave up. The only thing I wish we could have done was get someone more serviceable back outside of Morris (i.e. Royce O’Neal) but I don’t think the contracts would’ve worked.
We are living in a decade where the clippers gave up 5 FRP and SGA for Paul George and minny gave up 5 FRP for Rudy and somehow people are claiming this an all time disaster when no one even knows how it will shake out yet.
It’s less than Minnesota gave for Gobert. Players like Kyrie cost.
This wouldn’t be so bad if you didn’t have to trade to fill the void that Brunson left. We could have traded Brunson for a good big or assets. But instead we had to trade depth to get a star, this team is rough man
Mavs surely became a better team after the Kyrie trade, right?
The problem with the kyrie trade was we traded defense for offense. And the offense we acquired barely played. Sometimes availability is the best trait smh
