49ers draft: Football Outsiders gives the 49ers a “D” grade for failing to improve its roster during the Draft

  1. The draft is so funny to me. ‘Failing to improve its roster’? The draft is a total lottery. Every year everyone goes wild with how life changing X player will be for a team, but rookies going to rookie. Yes, there are generational talents who have immediate impacts, but, am I messed up for thinking a majority of draft prospects are busts?

Someone posted here awhile back Kittle and Juice’s draft profiles. Spoiler, they were rated poorly. The number 19th overall in pick in George’s draft was TE was OJ Howard. He’s on his 4th team.
How many players from Juice’s draft are gone now? Draft grades are ridiculous unless it’s years down the line.

  2. Fill biggest need at kicker? Check.

Finding Gipson/Ward successor at safety? Check (imo best safety in the draft.)

Get depth and talent at TE2, which Kyle has been trying to do for a few seasons. Check.

Get Height/Weight/Speed Talent as depth at corner, LB and pass rusher? Check, Check and Check.

Then we also found a receiver, projected to go higher, with great ball skills and versatility, in the 7th. Ronnie bell could be our next Richie James or Jennings (late round helpful receiver.)

I don’t get how people hate this draft, oh we didn’t get offensive lineman! Well, there wasn’t anyone who would start above what we got. We also got someone rated in the 4th round at Tackle as a UDFA.

    A grade

  3. I mean every player we selected was 10-25 slots ahead of pre-draft rankings, so stands to reason it be looked upon as a fail 🤷‍♂️

  4. Even the guys who put out these grades say they’re BS. They just do it for the traffic. Also, a shame what has happened to Football Outsiders. Not their content, but their business is on the brink after being acquired by sports gambling bros.

  5. Just based on players I wanted them to get I give them a big fat F! But they definitely drafted 2/3 guys that will be big time contributors

  6. Draft grades are meaningless. If done at all, they should be done two years after each draft.

  7. >Jake Moody should have been depth at receiver or on the interior offensive line, two units the 49ers didn’t bother addressing, even with all of their Day 3 picks.

I mean, not a premium pick, but we drafted a WR in Ronnie Bell. Just a weird oversight.

  8. Literally the only position they could’ve improved is the kicker and they did it. I guess it’s the 49ers fault for being too god and none of the other rookies on the board were good enough to beat their incumbents for the starting jobs.

  9. I think it is fair if the criteria is based on improvement. Lost Gould, added a rookie kicker is not improvement. McKivitz over McGlinchey is at best break even. Adding Hargrove over Kinlaw is a likely improvement.

The problem with improvement-based scoring is that elite teams have little to improve.

  10. If this was a D, then who the hell were we supposed to draft to get an A? Like these asshats know more then our scouts and front office does. Trust the process, this is the way

  11. I’d just like to point out the Niners draft most of their players a year or two in advance

Their immediate needs are dudes that have been drafted and developing on the roster for the past couple years already.

That safety we picked? That’s Gibson’s job the pick is for next year.

Trey Lance? Jimmy job the pick was for the following year.

Ambry and Lenoir? Was E-Mans job the picks were for the following year

They plan ahead pretty well, McKivits and Moore have been developing on the roster for a McGlinchey departure for years

  12. If they get a few good players in this draft it’s a success but we have no clue now outside of comparing to consensus boards

  13. Oh no, how will I sleep at night now knowing that outsiders gave us a D. Oh I know how… IDGAF

  14. No one knows who had a good or bad draft until years later. I hope we did but time will tell. 2012/2011 Seahawks draft were looked at being D grades when they got the legion of boom and Wilson…Just remember they have no idea.

  15. Hit me with a draft grade after these guys have 3 seasons under their belt. Grading a draft before anybody has played a single snap is asinine.

  16. For what we had to work with I think they did a great job. I feel like most these grades are knocking is because we had to draft players they weren’t really familiar with

  17. Maybe it’s just me, but if Trey Lance is the week 1 starter (assuming Purdy still out) and Christian McCaffrey is the starting RB it feels like they made good use of their draft picks to improve their roster.

  18. Anyone who gives draft grades before the players even touch the field, isn’t a real NFL reporter

  19. So what this is telling me is, there’s going to be a couple hall of famers in this draft class. Nice

  20. “I don’t understand most of what the 49ers did, and I don’t really care to.”

What a stupid take. The writers basically saying, “i suck at my job, and don’t want to get any better at it.”

    Give that writer a D.

  21. Yeah they’re getting negative reviews across the board. Lol we really in here like BUT WE GOT THE BEST KICKER WHO CARES THAT PHILLY AND SEATTLE DRAFTED THE BEST PROSPECTS IN THE DRAFT WE GOT A KICKER GUYS!!!!1111

  22. I wonder how they rated Purdy, Kittle, Hufanga, Greenlaw, and Jennings after they were drafted?

Our front office doesn’t hit a homerun with every pick, but they seem to know a thing or two about drafting guys in the mid to late rounds. For that reason, I really don’t care about how the picks are perceived the day after the draft.

I see this draft being great for the following reasons: we shored up a glaring hole at kicker and we added a bunch of guys with talent and positive attitudes (seemingly) to develop at positions for the future.

  23. 49ers failed to improve arguably the best roster in the league with only college students drafted in the 3rd round or later… they obviously suck at drafts…

Who the fuck are these clowns writing articles like they’re some kind of actual analyst. It’s like saying a top tier college team failed to improve their roster by bringing in a bunch of college freshmen to an already stacked roster at almost every position.

  24. Was always going to be the case with no high picks to work with, but it’s still stupid to grade drafts immediately after. No one can tell the future.

Everyone on Philly’s nuts right now, but their picks could just as easily be busts
