[John Denton] Cards RHP Adam Wainwright on meeting with Willson Contreras: “What we did was we sat down yesterday and just poured into him. We love this guy. We’re glad he’s here and we want him to be our guy. I think he took it well. Honestly, I don’t know if anyone’s ever told him that.”

  1. So now we are scapegoating Contreas? Gimme a fuckin break. Our pitching peaks at average on paper

  2. I’m a major league pitcher. I don’t know what pitch to throw. Text Yadi.

  3. Wow so our pitchers are pissed that they don’t have Molina doing all the leg work and have unrealistic expectations

  4. Clearly the only thing to take away from this is that Waino is leading a clubhouse coup against Oli and Mo

  5. Maddux knew the staff without Yadi would struggle big time so he jumped ship real quick to make sure he didn’t get any blame. Maddux is smart as fuck.

  6. I’m so confused why Wilson is being blamed for all the woes when the pitching sucks ass and it doesn’t matter who is catching

  7. Has there been any specifics about what the problem is? Are they arguing that Contreras isn’t prepared for the batters they will be facing?

  8. Everyone knew the pitching was going to be ok at best. Stop with this and take some accountability.

  9. Pitchers focus on execution. Catchers spend hours before each series going over the strengths and weaknesses of each hitter. Pitchers spend the majority of that time working on execution. And recovery. You are putting way too much on the pitcher of they are calling games. That is the point really. The pitchers want someone that they trust throwing down signs. Particularly with the pitch clock. They don’t need Yadi. Kiz is doing fine in that regard. They simply do not trust Contreras. And for what it is worth, neither did the Cubs’ pitchers last year

  10. “We love this guy. We’re glad he’s here and we want him to be our guy … Honestly, I don’t know if anyone’s ever told him that.”

That’s … pretty damning of the clubhouse culture, if true.

  11. Okay, so we’re all pretending that the reason the Cards can’t pitch is because Contreras? Waino is a vet and should know better

  12. I’m sorry, but why was this not done the day after signing? What was Oli doing? Does he have any sense whatsoever?

This further validates my post last week about Oli being propped up by tremendous veteran presences and having absolutely no idea what he’s doing otherwise.

And where’s the pitching coach here? How do you get a new catcher and not evaluate his ability to call and catch a game?

Oli has to go. We don’t even have to sign outside the organization, but we do have to sign someone that has an idea of what the heck they’re doing when it comes to managing a baseball team.

  13. Do we need to, as fans, keep cheering for Contreras to try and keep him happy? Wtf is going on.

  14. Is everyone struggling with reading comprehension? Wainwright is saying the team rallied around Contreras and made sure he knew they were glad he’s here. Sounds like a great thing for the team leader to do.

  15. Nobody else here is reading this as Waino throwing shade at Oli/Mo huh?

  16. All our mediocre pitchers are vets who shouldn’t need the catcher to hold their hands. Contreras is saying the right things now, but this looks bad to any potential free agent or guy you’re trying to get to waive a no trade clause in the future. Oli’s bush, needs to go asap, I’ve long thought the criticism of Mo was overblown but he’s blessed this idiocy with the Barrera call up and unwillingness to go after any pitching upgrade. DeWitt needs to clean house. Pitching is hurt by the constant shuffling of the OF defense. The OF surplus i’m sure is supposed to lead to a pitching upgrade at the deadline, but Oli and Mo have completely f’d that up by not allowing anybody to get consistent outfield ab’s. Add to that blaming it all on your primary catcher for the next five years while simultaneously taking ab’s from Gorman/Yepez/Donovan to give to Andy Uecker is ridiculous. There may not be much in the way of pitching upgrades right now, but Contreras needs to be behind the plate to maximize value. O’Neil (if healthy), Carlson and Noot need to get the OF Ab’s, until they prove they aren’t capable. You can’t play all these kids (excluding Old’neil) 4 days a week and expect them to develop. Making a big show of Walker making the team out of spring just to send him down a month later was moronic too. Also this all just might be Nolan Arenado turning into Trip Cromer’s fault.

  17. The biggest take away from all of this is I think Oli is……..kind of a dickhead
