[Drexler, April 2020] “Instead of rebuilding, which is what Portland was doing, which I thought was premature… I don’t want to play and develop young players. If you’re doing that you need to be coaching.”

Just stumbled across this quote from Clyde Drexler on The Platform Basketball Podcast. Thought it sounded eerily similar to the stuff Dame has said publicly.

Full quote:

>Instead of rebuilding, which is what Portland was doing, which I thought was premature. It was way too premature. We were good. They started rebuilding and I said, you know what, you gotta do me a favor and let me go home to Houston, Paul Allen, where I’ve got a chance to fight for a championship. I don’t want to play and develop young players. If you’re doing that you need to be coaching.

  1. I often half-jokingly say that this was the move that stopped my following of NBA basketball for many years. Reality is that I just went off to college, was busy with my studies, and didn’t have great access for watching games at the time. Still hurt though, as my NBA and Trail Blazer fandom was built on the Drexler/Porter/Kersey/Williams/Duckworth lineup that just couldn’t quite win the championship.

  2. Only difference between Clyde requesting a trade and Dame is I know dame’s trade won’t fuck is over the way Clyde’s did.

  3. Dame is the same age as Clyde was when he was traded. Imagine trading Dame for a player who has only 1 all star appearance three years ago and has only declined in performance every year since then. Oh and you made a team that had already won a championship the previous year almost a lock now to repeat again this year. Best trade ever.
