Thoughts?

Honestly, this is interesting. I know he’s got the entire 2023 season ahead of him, but if he has an impressive campaign I could see this type of deal working out. But he also might want something more long term if he and the team see substantial success. What’d ya think?

  1. 100% would do it if he has another good season. There’s no way Goff or his agent go for this if he has a good season though. You lock down future money while you’re still a valuable asset and he would make that on the open market for a longer deal.

I do think this is like a best case scenario for the lions present and future though.

  2. I say you do it before the season. What’s the worst that could happen? We’ve seen enough to know he is at least top 20 in the league. Top 10 last season and hopefully this season.

  3. Goff can go to the superbowl. If that’s good for salary cap then it makes sense. My only concern is his horrible deep ball. I feel like it would open the team more.

However another thing is ben Johnson is about to be gone. I’m going to be very nervous next year regardless of our talent and qb and team trending up..

  4. I want to watch this season first before we get too hasty. He played at a great level last season but let’s see if he’ll regress

  5. Too short. I’d go one more year.

He’s going to turn 29 this season and his deal expires after 2024.

If we believe he’s the guy, you give him 3 years, which means he’s here until 2027. He’ll be 33 at the end of that.

And then after that, you’ve got flexibility. That’s generally when you do start to see some age at the position.

  6. I feel like Goff is a better QB in Detroit than at least 25 other teams. And those other teams aren’t looking to sign Goff.

  7. If he is just as good this year if not better I would want the deal to be longer even if it costs more AAV so we can do some cap magic the first few seasons to stretch the title window and add it all onto void years

If this is all he would take and he’s married to FA at age 33, yes I would say it’s acceptable.

  8. Doesn’t he have the entire 2024 season ahead of him too? Make him earn in. Sorry, going 8-2 in the last 10 games last year was great and all but is that what’s ahead or is it the previous 23 games?

  9. 1000% give me this. The market for QB’s is insane. This keeps you competitive and still at a reasonable price.

  10. I would not pay him a penny more than he makes right now. I would expect him to take a pay cut to stay on as our starting QB.

I don’t believe we can win a Super Bowl with Jared Goff, and there is zero reason to pay a starting QB you can’t win a Super Bowl with anything more than a 1st round rookie deal.

  11. I think the current lineup of QBs in the NFL is awful. Brady retired. Stafford, Rodgers, Wilson, and Ryan aren’t who they used to be. And some players who should be in their prime have fizzled out (Deshaun Watson, Kyler Murray, potentially Dak Prescott). We could see some of the younger QBs continue to improve and take over the league (Tua, Trevor Lawrence, Hurts) but it’s too early to say.

Relative to their QB competition at the time, Goff is more valuable now than Stafford was around 2015-2020 (assuming Goff can keep this level up). Stafford was a great QB among all time great QBs. Goff is a very good QB among pretty mediocre QBs (besides Mahomes).

  12. I’ll rather use that cap space to fill out the defense and pay our players in-line for a payday

  13. That’s it? Seems low. I would expect a longer contract with those yearly numbers (eg 4 years $164 mil with 100 guaranteed).

  14. They could do it with a 4 year deal. Similar to a Derek care type contract.

  15. Players like Mitch Trubisky and Marcus Marquita get two year extensions.

If Goff is real, it’ll take more than some measly two year deal to keep him.

  16. If he gets us to the playoffs and wins atleast one playoff game, I want the long term extension haha.

Playoffs regardless should mean some sort of extension.

  17. That would amazing if Goff agrees to that but he’s likely looking for a long term bag.

  18. You guys are all dumb if you don’t want Goff long term. His resume is amazing.

  19. We need him. He’s underestimated and a built in key piece of our offense.

  20. If they want to extend Goff long term then better to do it now then wait a year. The chances that Goff regresses this year is small in my opinion. The general consensus seems to be the talent on offense and the team in general is better. Ben Johnson is back for at least this season. We should have our 5 starting O-linemen all on the field for the first time since 2020 and Holmes and the coaching staff believe in Goff. They’ve never even hinted at anything other than he’s the guy. I think the Derrick Carr + a little on top contract is very fair for both sides. FTP

  21. Goffs not signing anything unless his agent tells him to. Not sure he’d hold out if his agent recommends it but he isn’t negotiating anything himself.

  22. What’s guaranteed is probably more important then anything else. It’s impossible to make an informed decision.

  23. Sorry I’ve been too busy betting the Lions to win 12-16 games this season to see this

  24. Honestly he’s under contract for this season so I really don’t care about all of that right now. See what he does this year and then think about an extension. I doubt his price will go up THAT much in a year
