[Smith] “Raptors head to the final stage of their head coach search…Becky Hammon, the head coach of the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces, drew some initial interest but she never became a serious candidate”

>Multiple NBA sources say the franchise is moving to a second round of interviews for the job that became vacant when Nick Nurse was let go last month after five seasons.
>
>One source said Raptors vice chairman and president Masai Ujiri has narrowed the list of candidates to three and final interviews are being scheduled, although that number was not independently confirmed.
>
>…
>
>There are several legitimate possibilities that have emerged in conversations with multiple league sources:
>
>**Steve Nash** would be a good fit and may thrive under with a more stable management and roster situation than he had to deal with in a tumultuous tenure with the Brooklyn Nets.
>
>Sacramento associate head coach **Jordi Fernandez** is among the most highly regarded assistants in the league and was a finalist for the vacant Phoenix job that a source says has been narrowed to Nurse and Doc Rivers.
>
>**JJ Redick** may not have any coaching experience but as an ex-player he would command respect and be an out-of-the-box hire who would set the Raptors apart from many other franchises.
>
>**Sergio Scariolo**, the former Raptors assistant and current coach of the Spanish national team, may want to become the first truly international head coach in the NBA. Ujiri and Webster flew to Italy to conduct an interview earlier this month.
>
>**Monty Williams** has a proven track record with the Phoenix Suns and is highly respected throughout the league, but it’s unclear whether the Raptors formally interviewed him.
>
>**David Adelman** of the Denver Nuggets is one of the most-touted assistants in the league but he’s also tied up for a couple of week as his current team seeks an NBA championship.
>
>**Chris Quinn** of the Miami Heat is in the same situation as Adelman but is considered one of the best assistants around.
>
>**Becky Hammon**, the head coach of the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces, drew some initial interest but she never became a serious candidate.

Not a ton of new news aside from how it sounds like Hammon didn’t make it to the final stage of the coaching search.

  1. so jj reddick and steve nash are more serious candidates than becky? is masai baked lol?? U would think he would consider someone with a shit load of assistant experience plus wnba head coaching experience over those two but ok

  2. This roster situation is not stable at all 😂, more stable than Nets tho I guess

  3. Am I crazy for thinking a Steve Nash with Jj Reddick as the head assistant wouldn’t be awful? Still would really like Atkinson first though (not sure why he’s not on here) and also Jordi is pretty interesting. The fact that Toronto is usually pretty tight lipped and there haven’t been many leaks on atkinsons side makes me hopeful he’s at the top of masia’s list.

  4. So predictable, the Becky Hammon social media stans and writers using her name for PR and if you criticize it you hate women.

  5. Would love any of David Adelman, Jordi Fernandez, Chris Quin or Sergio Scariolo.

I think with Sergio Scariolo track record he might be a guy you consider when the team is closer to contending, the guy just wins where ever he goes.

  6. FWIW, Bill Simmons thinks Kevin Young gets the Phoenix job. He’s been right on stuff before and has a relationship with Ishbia.

  7. I want an outsider. Like someone on the margins of society, who doesn’t see things the way we do, like a homeless person.

  8. To people complaining about JJ, I think Doug is just summarizing our already confirmed interests + big names, because he says this

    >There are several legitimate possibilities **that have emerged in conversations with multiple league sources:**

    >Monty Williams has a proven track record with the Phoenix Suns and is highly respected throughout the league, **but it’s unclear whether the Raptors formally interviewed him**

So which one is it lol did his name emerge or is it not known whether we interviewed him? Doug is click baiting and JJ will draw clicks

    >JJ Redick may not have any coaching experience but as an ex-player he would command respect and be an out-of-the-box hire who would set the Raptors apart from many other franchises

Wtf does that even mean lol, it certainly doesn’t mean he is anywhere near the candidate. Doug is a hack now.

  9. Would love Quinn or Fernandez, and I could see them going that way.

For some reason I just have this feeling they might hire Nash though lol.

Side note: I so hope Phoenix hires Doc lmao

  10. >Becky Hammon, the head coach of the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces, drew some initial interest but she never became a serious candidate.

Didn’t stop Toronto media from getting their cheap clicks though!

I’m all for the best candidate getting the job, whatever gender. It’s just so corny how the media dogpiled on this when there was never much substance to her candidacy.
