My take: honestly I’ve kinda been thinking about the possibility of something like this, since we excel at defense but maybe need a bit of work on offense (and Toronto is kinda the opposite). But losing Pesce would hurt, especially since he’s a right shot. But so is Marner. I just don’t know about this. Is Marner the guy who will take us to the next level? And can we make up for losing one of our better d-men, who is also a right-shooter? I’m pretty skeptical of this.
I admittedly don’t know enough about other teams and players to know the market but Necas and Pesce plus a prospect and 2 picks seems like a lot to give up imo

So, emotionally, this is a big no for me. Losing two of my favorite players for a player that for some reason I just really dislike. I mentioned in another thread that Marner just strikes me as an insufferable douche and not someone that would buy into Rod’s team-first playing style. He may not actually be like that, but that just my gut feeling when I’ve seen some of his on ice stuff.
Putting that aside, it also seems like that trade is a bit of an over payment. It would be rough to lose Pesce. Based on his interview, he seems like he wants to be around for the long haul. He has been the solid on the shutdown pairing. He isn’t without his lapses, but we don’t have anyone as defensively responsible on the right side.
Another note, I think the goal this offseason would be to get a sniper and/or high level physical player. I think that fills the needs of our team. I don’t think Marner is either. He is good defensively as far as I can tell, but it would be adding another undersized guy to the lineup. I’m also pretty sure he is more of a playmaker style player. As much as I hate to say it, a Tom Wilson or Tarasenko meet our needs better, I think.
What a fleece, so you know it’s the typical Toronto media BS overvaluing their players. Leaving it at Necas and Pesce could be a discussion though tbh

Lmao that is a massive overpayment on our end. Also isn’t Marner known to be soft and invisible in the playoffs? If Necas and Pesce are the pieces we are willing to part with in a trade I’d look for a different player.

Done in a heart beat. Marner is a generational talent that consistently scores 90+ points. Necas has had 1, maybe 2 good season. Necas has that potential but why gamble it when you can get a guaranteed guy that will do it. Pesce would hurt to loose but he’s a UFA after next season and we have the farm system to replace him. I think it would be a win win for both teams
I remember last offseason when some Leafs account said Necas for Holl made sense. I’m not an expert but whenever I see Leafs trade proposals, I just assume roughly 3/4 of what they’re asking is the reasonable price.

I don’t think it’s worth it. I also think it makes more sense to trade Skjei than Pesce rather than lose Pesce in a trade and then have Skjei walk the next year. Marner is good but I don’t think he’s the missing piece.
Hard No. Not with Pesce. Burns is old, Gost is probably gone, and I see Skjei being likely trade fodder at the deadline. Pesce said he wants to play his whole career here, make it happen.
I don’t like the idea of trading Necas but if it’s for a star scorer I can live with that. But I don’t see Marner as a solution to our problems.
Between the two with nothing else in consideration I would keep Necas just based on familiarity with the system and chemistry with the team. Marner only had 30 goals over 80 games, that’s less than Aho over like 60. Necas had 28 over 82, is 2 years younger and already is acclimated to playing with us. Hard to see Marner as an upgrade tbh when he did jack shit against the same team that finished us in the playoffs.
If we package Necas it better be for a 40 goal scorer or higher. Him plus prospects or a depth guy for a 40 plus guy would be acceptable, but not for Marner and definitely not with Pesce, we lose that trade hard.

This ain’t it. Wouldn’t say no to Marner but he disappears every post season, trading Necas for him would be trading a problem for the same problem.
The thing for me is that Keefe seems like an awful coach and maybe Rod could mold him into a better playoff performer? (Worth noting that Tkachuk used to have a similar rep in Calgary and look at how that turned out). Still too risky for my money, Pesce needs to stay unless Skiej is guaranteed to extend with us or he’s part of a Tkachuk level trade.
Marner is a good in the season…very good…but he’s a pussy, soft and does nothing in the playoffs….exactly what we need /s
