  1. Whenever I see a sports coach who claims to be analytics driven, my first thought is, is this coach a Billy Beane (Oakland A’s GM) or a Peter Brand (Oakland A’s Assistant GM).

Billy Beane can claim to be analytics driven guy all he wants, but it is Peter Brand who understands the statistics. Analytics is not just looking at percentage of shots, and probability of make, etc. but understanding whether those percentages are gonna hold up when all or most of the confounding factors creating that data are accounted for.

So, is Joe a Billy Beane or a Peter Brand?

  2. It works over the course of a season. Perhaps even over the course of a playoff run.

When you need one shot, a crucial possession or a possession to get back on track? You’re taking a 35%-40% shot over a 50-60+% shot for crucial points

You need to be able to generate looks at all 3 levels offensively. You need to put yourself in position during the season to take those shots so that there’s experience when you need them

  3. I agree with the writer. It was a very real concern and didn’t stand the test of playoffs. We came this far mostly because of talent. And we have under-achieved.

  4. As a Monday Morning quarterback who knows nothing of the game of basketball I agree with all of the analysis but remain skeptical.
