New post @TheAthleticNHL: My second 1st round projection of the 2023 NHL Draft

Pronman has the habs picking Reinbacher in his latest mock draft. He says that he’s hearing more and more that the defenseman is pushing for the top 5.

  1. Reinbacker is objectively a sick prospect and any other draft year I’d be fucking stoked but missing out on michkov does hurt if that happens. A thing we all need to remember is that projections are just that, we need chill out because either way that won’t change anything other than our blood pressure

  2. I just have a hard time believing Michkov drops past 5. I don’t even think he will be available at 5 tbh.

  3. I honestly wouldn’t be that disappointed if we pick Reinbacher.

I’d prefer Michkov but I kinda been expecting us to pass on him for a while and assuming Bedard, Fantili, Carlsson and Smith are gone, Reinbacher is next on my list. Kinda toying with idea of having Reinbacher ahead of Smith but I’m not there yet.

  4. He also has us taking Tanner Molendyk at 31

There’s a 0% chance of us taking two defensemen in the first round. Why waste a 1st-rounder on a bottom-4 defenseman when we already have a ton of young ones?

  5. Reinbacher would not be my pick but I would totally understand it if they decided to draft the best RHD available. That would complete our defense and would give us a lot of options considering the depth we have on the left.

We could have this for a next season

    Matheson – Savard

    Guhle – Kovacevic

    Edmundon – Barron

    Xhekaj – Barron

and progressively start trading these assets (Edmundson, Savard, kovacevic, Matheson, harris) for other pieces to improve our offense and let the kids take their place after leaning in laval. We could progressively get better and end up with something like this in afew years

    Guhle – Mailloux

    Hutson – Reinbacher

    Xhekaj – Barron

And we still have not talked about some of our other defensive prospects in Trudeau, Engstrom, Struble, Tourigny. The first two could become second pair dman and the last two third pair dmen.

It’s not the only way of builind a team that is for sure but that is one way to do it. We would not have to worry about defense anymore for a long long time and we could focus all or almost all of our picks on offense.

  6. I’ve been saying the same thing here constantly and all I get is grief and downvotes. Reinbacher is a sweet prospect and he’s exactly what the team needs. He has upside as a franchise RHD with solid two-way play and decent size. They can bring him over right away and develop him properly. When are they ever going to have another opportunity to draft a guy like that at 18? Even if he flatlines you’re still getting a righty who can play 20 minutes a game

  7. The habs aren’t taking Michkov. Just wrap your heads around it . It’s not happening.

  8. Pronman is higher than most on Reinbacher, but I don’t hate the pick.

People will complain but would you rather have Zegras or Seider? the choice isn’t obvious to me.

His production is impressive (~0.5ppg as an 18 year old in a men’s league) and his defensive game is sound as well. Id put him in the same tier as Leonard/Smith/Benson, and he plays a coveted position.

Positional needs are secondary, but he definitely fills a positional need, which is something to consider when the choice isn’t obvious.

  9. Leaving this draft without a high end forward would feel like a loss even if Reinbacher ends up being an absolute stud

  10. Je me demande c’est qui cet homme? C’est tu un journaliste ayant des bonne connections avec plusieurs scouts de la ligue comme Bob Mackenzie ou simplement un random monsieur de l’internet faisant sa propre liste?

  11. I don’t get why any of y’all pretend you have a clue what’s gonna happen on draft day.

  12. No way in Hell should we pass up on Michkov if he’s available at 5.

I also don’t see how Hughes/Gorton would either? The whole reason for taking Slaf was not for who he might be in 2, 3, 4 years, but that he’d have the highest ceiling/best career long-term out of any player in the draft.

If not for the Russian invasion, there’d be no question about Michkov being #2, and you’d have some people say he’d be even a challenge for Bedard. If we can’t have Michkov for a few years, so what? we’re kidding ourselves if we think it’s mission critical for him to play next season or the year after, because we won’t be competing until his KHL contract ends anyway

You do not pass up on that upside

  13. Honestly, picking Reinbacher over Michkov would make me sad, but is something I can understand somewhat if they are really afraid he won’t come over.

On the other hand, Molendyk at 31 is criminal. We have infinite LHD already. Why does he have us taking another, who is 5’11” and barely scored above 0.5ppg in the WHL. He’s also projected to go mid second round looking at the averages on EliteProspects.

  14. If we take Reinbacher I give up on this team.

They want to pass on Michkov? Fine. But passing on Leonard, Benson and Moore for a prospect that would probably go around 10-15th overall if he was a lefty? Unforgivable mistake. We need offensive talent. Please Kent.

  15. Of the last 5 drafts Pronman was right about the Habs picking Kotkaniemi, Guhle and Slafkovsky.

  16. That would be the absolute worst pick for us to make in my opinion. Reinbacher isn’t projected to be anything special (McKenzie’s draft rankings compare him to Adam Larsson), and most scouts have him in the 10-20 range, so it would be a massive reach. What would make it double baffling is that we don’t need defense prospects. With Guhle, Hutson, Mailloux, Harris, Barron, Xhekaj, Norlinder and Struble, defense is actually our deepest position currently. We need offense, and this is a forward heavy draft, so why on Earth would we reach for an “okay” D-man?

Really, outside of Caufield and maybe Hutson, no one in this team or in our system really has anywhere close to game breaking talent. Talent like that is incredibly hard to find anywhere outside the draft, and will be available at 5th when we draft. Passing up on that just boggles my mind.

  17. If Michkov is gone then Carlsson or Smith is on the board. Why would we jump to a D when we can have a bonafide 1C or 2C right there

  18. Reinbacher is this years Sanderson/Seider so it doesn’t surprise me. I like him about as much as Smith (if we pass on Michkov or if he’s already picked).

  19. It’s a bit personal dilemma for me because I’m really high on reinbacher and I think he could be a home run at 5. But the offensive talent available at 5 is very noteworthy. Maybe if we see a trade à la Dach that brings back à bonifide young forward I’d feel a lot better about selecting reinbacher
