  1. These things don’t bother me. They are imaginary rankings for entertainment. They don’t mean anything.

  2. We have a better record than Cleveland against a tougher schedule than Cleveland and have beaten Cleveland in both series we played them. Having Cleveland above us is indefensible and lazy, but power rankings don’t really matter anyway

  3. We had a 16-11 Record in May with -9 Run differential. Just happy to be talking about games back at all.

  4. Well it’s not like power rankings give the team some sort of super boost on the field. It’s just for funsies. The Guardians do have a better run differential than the Tigers by a lot.

  5. Detroit fans and chips on their shoulders. Amirite?

But seriously, two games separate them and the tigers are where they are because they are overachieving and the guardians are where they are because they are underachieving.

If you are just going to build your power rankings based on record then why do them at all?

  6. It’s okay that we have been playing better baseball than the first place team in our division, It’s just inevitable that Cleveland and twins will just be better, great analysis by ESPN as always👌

  7. Detroit is a AAA ball club at this point. Power Rankings are point in time, not a resume review.

  8. I mean, we’re basically tied with Cleveland for having the worst offense in the American League (based on OPS+, which is the only metric I’m using at eight o’clock in the goddamn morning). Cleveland has a *better* pitching staff than us (ERA+ of 107 for Cleveland and 97 for Detroit), so really it’s splitting hairs.

The other thing to keep in mind is that Cleveland is grossly underachieving compared to where people expected, while we are punching well above our expected weight class. So I reckon a lot of the “experts” anticipate us coming back down to where we’re expected.

And finally, the most important thing to remember: these lists are fake and don’t matter.

  9. Replace “ridiculous” with “hilarious”. Because ESPN is a joke.

  10. I mean I agree that power rankings don’t really mean much, but are we really going to get upset about Cleveland being 2 spots above us when we have similar records but we’re the ones performing higher than expectations?

  11. Why ESPN and MLB don’t just create an algorithm for these rankings is beyond me. It’s favoritism and expected performance. I’m sure the Tigers have had a tougher schedule thus far and with a better record too.

  12. tbf their points in our summary are valid (I didn’t read Cleveland’s because idc)

Our best pitcher and best position player are both injured for the foreseeable future. If we can survive a tough June, we’ll be ok.

  13. I mean, it kinda makes sense. We just lost Greene to a longer term injury and that guy has been our best player. It’s a power ranking because that’s who you’d expect to win in a head to head right now.

  14. Sports writers need to fill the empty spaces with inane analysis. Enjoy the season for what it is at this time, I hope we keep the momentum but am tempering said hope with reality.
