Davante Adams confirms that he left the Packers because the Greenbay FO lowballed him

Davante went on Brandon Marshall’s podcast and revealed a lot about why he left GB. Pretty much the GB FO gave him a disrespectful offer after the 2020 season for an extension, and that pretty much sealed the deal that he wasn’t going to come back. Apparently the Packers lowballed him by almost $10m / year. He was asking for high 20s per year and the Packers offered him around $20m/year. Adams said he would’ve been in Greenbay for sure if they gave a better offer (he confirmed that the packers eventually offered 28/year the year after but it was too late then).

Ironically enough the Packers offered him $28m/ year after the 2021 season, but the damage was done at that point and he wanted out.

He also acknowledges that the uncertainty around Rodgers played a part, but the main reason is that the FO disrespected him with the lowball offer.

  1. High 20’s is insane and I’m glad we got draft picks for him.

    It’s over.

  2. So he left because of normal negotiations? Hope he’s happy with whoever is backing up jimmy

  3. Why do we have to get butthurt? Why couldnt Davante express his feelings like an adult and have a negotiation with the front office? Instead he just got pissed and felt “disrespected”.

  4. So he left to be in Vegas which is closer to family, but also because the front office lowballed him and also to prove that his career didn’t rely on Aaron Rodgers

  5. We lowballed Adams, but made a bunch of all in moves for a season with Lazard as WR1; Really bad process tbh

  6. I’m tired of these players feeling “disrespected” when the team gives a low offer to open. It’s called negotiating…deal with it. And they low balled because they already had cap issues and could not afford a $28M per year WR. I’m sure glad they didn’t pay that

  7. A 20 million per year offer to start negotiations isn’t disrespectful at all. Sounds like his ego got in the way here, shouldn’t be taking standard negotiation tactics that personally.

  8. Everyone in here saying good riddance he left, like we just didn’t watch this past season having the worst wr core in the league and winning 8 games. Lmao

  9. So he got lowballed and then he didn’t? Damn, I’m glad we got rid of some of the divas.

  10. We probably dont end up with Quay Walker and Christian Watson if Davante stayed. While losing him was a bit of a hiccup by the FO, that same FO also got a 1st and a 2nd round pick for a guy who was basically a free agent. Which is kind of insane

  11. Aren’t you basically supposed to start low during a negotiation? One side starts low, the other starts high, and then you come to a mutual agreement somewhere in the middle. Maybe your ego is getting in the way if you take great offense to average negotiating tactics.

It’s like the Jets starting the trade wanting Aaron for the Favre deal and the Packers asking for the Wilson deal. It’s like, if you really wanted to be there in the first place, you wouldn’t let the starting negotiation be the nail in the coffin.

  12. I may be wrong but it looks like Amari Cooper at $20/year was the highest paid WR at the time. IIRC, Hopkins had just made $29 mil in 2020 but that was because he got a new deal from the Cardinals and was still owed money by Houston. Adams wanted Hopkins’ 1 year pay to be the benchmark and the front office wanted Cooper’s deal to be the benchmark. I wouldn’t call that a lowball at all.

  13. I’m perfectly fine with having an entire receiving room for under 10m this year lol. He was good and obviously I miss having him as a weapon for our offense but it’s not like he’s the difference between us winning a SB and not. Maybe we make the playoffs with him but we don’t know that for sure, look at the Raiders. League leader in rushing with Josh Jacobs and a top receiver with Adams and they were still bad.

  14. Davante’s deal is $28 mil per year on paper but it will actually end up being I think $21 or 22 per year. Hopkins deal that was supposedly $28 mil per year was actually 19. Tyreek has the same structure. The teams add on very high non-guaranteed amounts to the last 2-3 years that makes the player feel good but they never get that money.

  15. Sounds like he was the one who could not leave his feelings at the door when it was time to negotiate. The “disrespect” of the first offer does not make the $28M any less valuable when they offered it later.

There is more than $$ that goes into the decision. I get the impression he was happy to have an excuse to take another offer.

And more power to him. People forget that this is a job. There is no reason to expect fealty out of a player. A chance to live somewhere new, work for a different organization, why not.

  16. Using the current WR #s is disingenuous when every single one of those players was re-upped to that salary post our Davante offer on 2020.

Here are the 2020 numbers: https://overthecap.com/position/wide-receiver/2020

So for $20mm as an opening offer, to a hometown team, who were already paying a HOF QB and multiple probowlers was not an insult.

Had he even taken the “low-ball” deal he would have been the 2nd highest paid player at the position, and I think we all know by the end of it he would have still reset the WR pay scale with his new deal.

This is a post made to try to paint the front office as clueless, yet again, by what I am sure is someone who spent the last 6 months blaming them for the Rodgers situation, and the sour grape responses from others I’m sure are as well.

Be hateful, but stop acting like gute and the rest are out here actively trying to sabotage the team like the owner in Major League, and realize this is what happens when you have a team with multiple possible HOF players on it, Multiple All pro players, and multiple probowl caliber players on the roster.

Either everyone gets a smaller cut to stay and play, or only some of them do. Rarely and for a very limited time can they all get their paper and the team stays solvent.

Edit: just checked OP history, and I was right about it being an AR fanboy it appears. Go buy your Jets Jersey and move on if this team isn’t to your liking anymore.

  17. To be perfectly blunt, reading that list of wideout salaries *two years* after this first “lowball” offer, I think Davante’s demand for 28m was just as far out of line as the FO’s 20m, and if he had such an overblown opinion of himself that 20m was “disrespectful”, then it’s just as well he left.

  18. None of the contracts you list in your post were made at the time the Packers made the alleged low-ball offer.

Per this source, exactly 3 WRs were making $20 million or more a year in 2020: https://overthecap.com/position/wide-receiver/2020

Less than $20 million as a starting offer doesn’t seem worthy of throwing a hissy-fit over. Adams wanted to get paid more than the Packers wanted to offer at the time. That’s legitimate on both sides. But now he’s whining about being disrespected despite the fact that they DID offer what he apparently wanted a year later. Whatever. He can enjoy playing for the Raiders and Jimmy G.

It’s very difficult for me to feel any pity for athletes being paid more per year than I will ever make, or be worth, whining about how getting offered that amount to play sportsball amounts to disrespect.

  19. Top 5 WR contracts in 2020 were (based on Over The Cap’s numbers):

    DeAndre Hopkins: $29 Mil
    Julio Jones: $22.2 Mil
    Amari Cooper: $20 Mil
    Keenan Allen: $19.25 Mil
    AJ Green: $18 Mil

Starting negotiations at tied for 3rd highest paid at the position is not a lowball offer at all. Especially when Hopkins’ amount is over inflated because of circumstances. So offering 3rd most money to start negotiations is somehow disrespectful? Naw, that’s stupid.

  20. Now he’s stuck with the Raiders. Picked the wrong division ACF West. The Chiefs will own that division for the foreseeable future.

  21. Packers initial offer three years ago vs other receivers 2023 final agreed upon wages. Not apples to apples. Why not show the other receivers initial offer three years ago as the comparison?

And the Packers ended up offering $28 million two years ago—which would still be 2nd highest as of now.

  22. Chase money or chase rings. Packers fan here, you know what you’re dealing with at GB, ain’t no pharma money or Walmart money paying your salary. You sign on to the culture to get a championship or do your thing and bounce. No hard feelings, just be honest. Did Davante really think he was gonna get a ring in Vegas or did he want money? Just answer that question honestly, and stand by your answer. There weren’t any questions about Aaron going into 2022 that Aaron didn’t manufacture his own damn self, so if that’s the reason Te left, that says a whole helluva lot about Rodgers.

  23. How come everyone of the the guys in Rodger’s circle have turned normal NFL stuff into some sort of drama.

This comes across as normal NFL negotiations, yet he wants to play it as if he was a victim of the FO… crazy.

  24. There are like 5-6 types of contracts in the NFL:

    1. Full team advantage
    2. Mutually beneficial but team advantage
    3. Mutually beneficial
    4. Mutually beneficial but player advantage
    5. Player advantage but ok
    6. Player advantage and dangerous to the team

Davante was an all-time great Packer but he wanted to be a 6 and that’s only for QBs, LTs and DEs.
