  1. Red Sox had to either add him to the ML roster by today or release/trade him per his opt out clause.

  2. Shame, but it just didn’t make sense to sacrifice one of our catchers for him. I’m sure he’ll get picked up by someone after that stint.

  3. He’s a hitter without a true major league position. Would probably do well on a bad team where he could catch and DH… but with the performance of wong and McGuire there was no room here

  4. Worth noting that, number one, the offensive environment in AAA is insane. In the International League, the league the WooSox play in, the *league average* slash line is .260/.356/.434, good for a .790 OPS. For some reference, the league average slash line in the AL right now is .246/.317/.405, for a .722 OPS.

And number 2, Alfaro’s slash line was also to the tune of 9 BB and 43 SO. That approach might work in AAA, but it certainly won’t work in the Majors, especially when you’re a negative on the defensive side of the ball.

  5. Good bat, but weak behind the plate.

A couple of home-stands ago in Worcester, they tried him at 1st Base and it was a disaster, two errors in one game if I remember correctly.

  6. Worth noting that he is an atrocious fielder. Basically a first baseman who can catch and by catch I mean physically catch the ball and not do much else

  7. Catcher is the one position I am willing to sacrifice offense production for overall defensive and play calling ability
